How can I check whether my site appears in Google AI Overviews?
99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read
You can check AI Overview appearance in two ways. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions for your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no clicks, CTR or position. A SERP capture shows whether an AI Overview appeared for one query, and which sites it linked, for one location and language at one moment. Use the report for scale and captures for specific buyer questions.
The two routes, and what each one tells you
There is no single number that says whether your site appears in AI Overviews. As of October 2026, you get two partial views, and you need both.
- Search Console's generative AI report tells you how often your pages earned impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode across all queries. It covers your whole property, but it doesn't tell you which queries triggered the appearance.
- A SERP capture tells you what Google showed for one specific query. You see whether an overview appeared and which sites it cited. It covers one query, one location, one language and one moment.
| Search Console report | SERP capture | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Your whole property | One query at a time |
| Metric | Impressions | Present or absent, plus cited links |
| Clicks, CTR, position | Not shown | Not applicable |
| Varies by location and language | Filter by country | Yes, each capture is one setting |
| Needs site verification | Yes | No |
The report answers "am I in AI Overviews at all?" The capture answers "am I in the overview for the question my buyers ask?" Start with the report, then capture the queries that matter commercially.
Route one: the Search Console generative AI report
Google added a generative AI performance report to Search Console. According to its help documentation, it reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can slice them by pages, countries, dates and devices. It shows no clicks, no click-through rate and no position. Google has described extra metrics only as a future intention.
The report finished rolling out globally around 11 August 2026, though Google's help page still described a partial rollout at that time. If you don't see it, check that you're on a verified property. Our walkthrough of using Search Console's generative AI report covers the setup.
Three limits matter when you read it:
- Impressions are not traffic. The report can't tell you whether an AI appearance sent anyone to your site.
- There is no API for it. The Search Analytics API covers classic Search only, so you export from the interface.
- One window is unreliable. Google confirmed a bug that depressed impressions in both the Search and generative AI reports from roughly 12 August 2026. Treat any trend that crosses that date with caution. If your numbers fell suddenly, read why Search Console AI impressions drop before you change anything.
Also be wary of any tool that reports your "position" in AI Overviews. Google exposes no position data, so there's nothing to check such a number against.
Route two: capture the results page for specific queries
A SERP capture records what Google returned for one query. It shows whether an AI Overview appeared, what it said, and which pages it used as supporting links. This is the route to use when the question is commercial: "Does the overview name us when someone asks for the best payroll tool for small agencies?"
Captures vary, so plan for that:
- Location and language change the result. An overview can appear in one country and not another, or in English and not Spanish. Capture from the market you sell into.
- The overview may not trigger. AI Overviews often do not appear at all, so test several phrasings of each buyer question.
- One capture is one moment. Repeat important queries over time before you draw a conclusion.
- AI Mode is a separate surface. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, and they can return different links. If you care about both, compare AI Mode and AI Overview answers for the same query.
You can search manually in a clean browser session. You can also use a tool built for this, such as the free AI Overview Checker, which checks one query at a time. The free AI Overview checker page explains what a capture can and can't tell you.
Why you might not appear, and which causes you control
If both routes come back empty, separate what you control from what you don't.
In your control: eligibility. Google's AI features documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link. Google also says there are no additional technical requirements. That makes the checks simple:
- Is the page indexed? Check URL Inspection in Search Console.
- Does it carry
noindex,nosnippetormax-snippet:0? Any of these removes it from AI answers. - Is key content wrapped in
data-nosnippet? That excludes it from snippets and AI display. Templates sometimes add it by accident. - Does robots.txt block Googlebot? No separate robots.txt token exists for AI Overviews. Googlebot rules are the control.
In your control, but easy to miss: the Search Console AI control. Inclusion in Google's generative features is the default. However, a property owner can opt out, and child properties inherit the parent's setting by default. Learn whether a Search Console setting could be hiding your site.
Not in your control: selection. Eligibility isn't inclusion. Google states that indexing and serving aren't guaranteed. Whether an overview triggers and which sources it picks are Google's decisions. No markup or llms.txt file changes that, and Google says Search ignores llms.txt.
What to do next
Work through this in order:
- Open the generative AI report. Note which pages earn impressions, and in which countries. Avoid reading trends across the mid-August 2026 bug window.
- List your buyer questions. Pick five to ten queries you'd want to be cited for.
- Capture each one in your main market and language, with a few phrasings. Record whether an overview appeared and who it cited.
- Check eligibility on the pages you expected to see: indexing, snippet directives, robots.txt and the Search Console AI control.
- Note who gets cited instead. If the overview cites other sites, being named on those sites is associated with appearing in the answer. That association comes with no guaranteed effect.
Appearing is only half the question. Once you're in, check whether the AI Overview describes your business accurately.
Does Search Console show clicks from AI Overviews? No. As of October 2026, the generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions only. Google's help documentation lists pages, countries, dates and devices as the dimensions. Clicks, click-through rate and position are not included. That means you can see that your pages appeared, but not whether those appearances sent visitors. Use your analytics referral data alongside the report, and accept that the two won't reconcile neatly.
Why does an AI Overview appear for me but not for my colleague? AI Overviews vary by location and language, and they don't trigger for every query. Personal context and timing can differ too. Two people searching the same words from different countries, or at different times, can see different results. When you test, fix the location and language to your main market. Then repeat the capture over several days before treating a result as typical.
Can I opt in to AI Overviews? There is nothing to opt in to. Google's documentation says no additional requirements or special optimizations are needed beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible. Inclusion in Google's generative features is the default for Search Console properties. The control that exists is an opt-out. Child properties inherit it from the parent by default, so check the parent property's setting if you appear nowhere.
Will adding schema markup get my site into AI Overviews? The evidence doesn't support that. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search. Ahrefs ran a matched-control study of 1,885 pages and found that AI Overview citations fell 4.6% after schema was added. Existing markup does no harm, so there's no reason to remove it. Just don't expect it to work as a lever for AI Overviews.
Is ranking in the top 10 enough to appear in AI Overviews? Ranking helps, but it isn't enough on its own. Ahrefs found that 38% of AI Overview citations in its March 2026 study came from pages in the top 10 results. The rest came from pages ranking lower or not ranking at all. Ranking well makes a citation more likely, but it doesn't guarantee one, and a lower-ranked page can still be cited.
