Free AI Overview Checker: See What Google Shows for Your Searches

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read

You can check AI Overviews for free by searching in a signed-out private browser window, setting language and country in the URL, and recording three things: whether an AI Overview appeared, what it said, and which pages it linked. Expect gaps. AI Overviews often do not trigger, results vary by location and language, and Google only links pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet.

What a free AI Overview check tells you

A manual check answers three questions for one query at one moment:

  • Did an AI Overview trigger? Many searches show no overview at all.
  • What did it say? The summary may describe your category, your competitors or your business, and it can get facts wrong.
  • Which pages did it link? The supporting links show whose pages Google drew on for that answer.

That is useful for spotting wrong facts and seeing who gets cited instead of you. It does not tell you a rank, a traffic number or a trend. Google exposes no position data for AI Overviews, so treat any number labelled as your "AI Overview rank" with suspicion.

If you want to find which queries trigger an overview in the first place, start with the free keyword trigger check, then come back to inspect the answers.

How to check an AI Overview by hand

Use a clean session so your search history and account do not shape the result.

  1. Open a private window. In Chrome use Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). In Firefox or Edge use Ctrl+Shift+P. Make sure you are signed out of Google.
  2. Write the query a buyer would type. Use their words, not your brand slogan. Say you run a dental clinic in Austin: try "emergency dentist austin open saturday".
  3. Set language and country in the URL. Paste a search URL like this, replacing the query:
https://www.google.com/search?q=emergency+dentist+austin&hl=en&gl=us

hl sets the interface language and gl asks for results from a country. Google still uses your IP location, so a VPN may be needed to see another market accurately. 4. Look above the organic results. An AI Overview appears as a generated summary near the top. If there is a "Show more" control, expand it. 5. Record the links. Open the link panel or link icons beside the summary and note every cited domain and URL. 6. Capture evidence. Take a full screenshot and note the date, time, query, hl, gl and whether an overview appeared. 7. Repeat. Run the same query later the same day and on another day. Change one variable at a time, such as country or wording.

How to read the result

Sort what you saw into one of four outcomes, because each points to a different next move.

What you saw What it means Next move
No AI Overview Google chose not to generate one for this query Test related wording; do not assume a problem with your site
Overview, you are linked Your page is in the set Google drew on for that answer Check the summary states your facts correctly
Overview, competitors linked Google cited other pages for this query Note which sites, and whether you are named on them
Overview says something wrong about you A factual error is reaching searchers Fix the source of the fact on your own pages and on cited pages

When engines cite other sites instead of yours, being named on those sites is associated with appearing in the answer. That is an association, not a guaranteed effect. For errors, the guide on checking whether an AI Overview describes your business accurately walks through what to compare.

Stating specific facts plainly on a page Google can fetch (your price, hours, service area) gives the engine a sentence it can quote. It does not guarantee it will.

Why your page may not be linked

Google states that to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. It also says there are no additional technical requirements and no special optimizations needed. Eligibility is not inclusion: Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed.

The things that can quietly block you are all checkable:

  • A noindex robots meta tag or header on the page.
  • Snippet controls that suppress display, such as nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or data-nosnippet on key sections. These are often inherited from a template.
  • Googlebot disallowed in robots.txt. There is no separate robots.txt token for AI Overviews; Googlebot rules are the control.
  • The Search Console generative AI inclusion control. Inclusion is on by default, but a property can be opted out, and child properties can inherit that setting from a parent.

A line like this in your page head removes the page from snippets, and so from AI Overview links:

<meta name="robots" content="max-snippet:0">

The AI Overviews eligibility checklist covers each item in order. Use Search Console's URL Inspection to confirm the page is actually indexed.

Limits of a manual check

A hand check is honest about one moment. It is weak at everything else.

  • Overviews often do not trigger. Google says so in its AI features documentation, so a blank result is normal.
  • Location and language change the answer. The same query in another country or language can return a different overview or none.
  • Answers change over time. As of October 2026, Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, so one does not predict the other. Compare them with the AI Mode vs AI Overview check.
  • Organic rank is a loose proxy. Ahrefs found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared within the first 10 results blocks (March 2026). Most citations came from further down.
  • Scale. Checking more than a handful of queries by hand gets slow and inconsistent.

For a wider view, Search Console now reports AI Overview impressions; see how to find AI Overview impressions in Search Console. It shows impressions only, with no clicks or position.

The free tool that does it faster

If you need to repeat the check across several queries without juggling private windows and URL parameters, the free AI Overview Checker runs the lookup and shows whether an overview appeared and which pages it cited.

Treat its output the same way you treat a manual check: a dated snapshot for a specific query and location. It cannot change what Google shows. What it saves is time, so you can spend it on the fixes you control, such as removing accidental snippet blocks and correcting wrong facts at their source.

More on this

Can I block AI Overviews with robots.txt? Not separately. Google has no robots.txt token just for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Disallowing Googlebot removes you from Search entirely. To keep a page out of AI Overview links while staying in Search, Google documents snippet controls such as nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet. Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding, and Google says it does not affect inclusion in Search.

Can I see AI Overview clicks in Google Search Console? No. As of October 2026, Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, broken down by page, country, date and device. It does not report clicks, click-through rate or position. That means Google's own reporting cannot tell you whether an overview sent you traffic, only that your page was shown.

Why doesn't my tool's Google AI result match the AI Overview I see? Many tools query the Gemini API with search grounding and label it Google AI. That is a different product from AI Overviews, which have no official API. Location, language, date and personalisation also differ between your browser and the tool. This explainer on [why a tool's Google AI result differs from the AI Overview](/questions/tool-google-ai-vs-ai-overview) covers the gap.

Will adding schema markup get my page linked in AI Overviews? The evidence does not support that. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema against matched controls and found no major uplift, with AI Overview citations falling 4.6%. Existing markup does no harm, but it is not a lever for being linked. Indexing and snippet eligibility are the documented requirements.
