Free AI Overview Keyword Check: Which Keywords Trigger AI Overviews

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read

You can check which keywords trigger AI Overviews for free. Search each keyword in a private browser window and note in a spreadsheet whether an AI Overview appears and whether your page is linked. Then use Search Console's generative AI report to see which of your pages earn AI impressions. The result is a dated snapshot that tells you where to look next. It is not a ranking.

What the free check tells you

The check answers two questions per keyword: did Google show an AI Overview, and was one of your pages linked inside it. That's all it measures, and it's enough to sort a keyword list into useful groups.

Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use different models and techniques" and return different links, and that AI Overviews often don't trigger at all. So a keyword list splits naturally. Some keywords show an overview, many don't, and the overview can change between searches. If you're unsure how often overviews appear, read whether AI Overviews appear for every search.

What the check does not tell you: whether a real user saw your link, whether they clicked, or where you "rank" inside the answer. Google exposes no position data for AI Overviews, which is why AI rank checkers have no rank to check.

How to run the check by hand

Set aside about a minute per keyword. Start with your 20 to 50 most valuable terms.

  1. Build the sheet. Create columns for: keyword, date, country and language, AI Overview shown (yes, no, or only after expanding), your URL linked (yes or no, and which URL), other domains linked, and your classic average position.
  2. Open a private window. Sign out of Google so personal history doesn't shape the result.
  3. Fix the country and language. Use a search URL with explicit parameters, for example https://www.google.com/search?q=emergency+dentist+cost&hl=en&gl=us. Here hl sets the interface language and gl sets the country. Keep these the same for every keyword. For checks across cities, see the free check of AI Overviews by city and language.
  4. Record what loads. If an overview appears, expand it fully and open its source links. Note every domain, and whether any link points to your site.
  5. Pull classic positions. In Search Console, open Performance, then Search results. Filter by query and copy the average position into your sheet. This is classic search data, not AI data.
  6. Pull AI impressions. In Search Console, open the generative AI performance report. It shows impressions only, broken down by pages, countries, dates and devices. Note which of your pages have AI impressions, then use the classic report to list the queries those pages already rank for. Those queries are good candidates to re-check by hand.
  7. Repeat on a schedule. Re-run the same list monthly with the same settings, so each row is comparable.

Two cautions about Search Console as of October 2026. Google confirmed a bug that depressed impressions in both the Search and generative AI reports from roughly 12 to 13 August 2026, so treat that window as unreliable. And the help page still describes a partial rollout, so check that the report is live on your property before you rely on it.

How to read the result

Sort the sheet into four groups. Each one has a different next move.

Group What it means Next move
Overview shown, you're linked Google treats your page as eligible and used it Check the overview describes you correctly
Overview shown, you're not linked Other pages were chosen Check eligibility, then study who is linked
No overview Google didn't generate one for this query Treat as a classic search keyword for now
Changes between checks The overview is unstable for this query Re-check before drawing conclusions

For the second group, start with eligibility. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, with "no additional technical requirements". Look for noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or data-nosnippet on the page. Templates often apply these by accident. Also check the generative AI inclusion control in Search Console: inclusion is on by default, but child properties inherit the parent's setting.

Then look at the domains Google linked. When an engine cites other sites instead of yours, being named on those sites is associated with appearing in the answer. A page that states a specific fact, such as a price or a one-line definition, gives the engine a sentence it can quote. Neither guarantees a link.

For the first group, accuracy matters more than presence. Here's how to check whether an AI Overview describes your business accurately.

What the top 10 finding does and does not mean

Your classic position column will tempt you to assume that ranking higher earns overview links. The evidence is weaker than that.

Ahrefs found in March 2026 that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared within the first 10 results. In the same study, the rest split roughly evenly between positions 11 to 100 and beyond 100. So most cited pages were not in the top 10.

Do not read this as a decline from an older, higher number. Ahrefs changed its parsing method between studies, so the earlier and later figures come from different instruments. BrightEdge reports a much lower top 10 share using an undefined measure of overlap, and the two results conflict rather than confirm each other.

The practical reading: a top 10 position is neither required nor sufficient. Use your classic position column as context, not as a forecast.

Limits of a manual check

Know what the sheet cannot show before you report it to anyone.

  • It's a snapshot. One search, one day, one location. Overviews vary by location and language, and can change on a repeat search.
  • It's a sample. You choose the keywords. Google's systems may run their own related searches across subtopics, and those queries are not visible to you.
  • There's no query-level AI data. Search Console's generative AI report has no query dimension, no clicks and no position. Your keyword-to-overview mapping comes only from your manual searches.
  • AI Mode is separate. A keyword can behave differently there. Use the free way to compare AI Mode and AI Overview answers if AI Mode matters to you.
  • A link isn't influence. Being linked doesn't prove Google used your text, and missing a link doesn't prove it ignored you.

If you need repeated measurement over time rather than a one-off sheet, read the difference between a checker and a tracker.

The free tool that does it faster

The manual method costs nothing but time, and time adds up past 50 keywords. The free AI Overview Checker on 99Visibility runs the lookup for you, so you can fill the "overview shown" and "your URL linked" columns without searching each term yourself.

Keep the same discipline either way: same location, same language, same date for every row. And keep the eligibility checks in your own hands. No tool can fix a stray nosnippet tag or an inherited Search Console setting for you.

More on this

Does Search Console show which keywords trigger AI Overviews? Not directly. The generative AI performance report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. It has no query, click or position data. You can see which pages earned AI impressions, then use the classic Performance report to list the queries those pages rank for, and re-check those queries by hand.

Why does an AI Overview appear one time and not the next? Google says AI Overviews often don't trigger, and the systems behind them can vary results by query, location and language. A repeat search can produce a different overview or none. Record the date, country and language for every check, and re-check any keyword that flips before you act on it.

Do I need schema markup to be linked in an AI Overview? No. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there are no additional technical requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible. Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overview citations fell 4.6% after pages added schema. Existing markup does no harm, but it isn't a lever for AI Overview links.

Can I block my content from AI Overviews without leaving Google Search? Partly. There's no robots.txt token for AI Overviews, since Googlebot rules cover all Google surfaces. On the page, `nosnippet`, `max-snippet:0` and `data-nosnippet` limit what Google can show. Search Console also has a generative AI inclusion control, which is on by default and still rolling out to some owners.

Does this check tell me whether ChatGPT mentions my brand? No. It covers Google AI Overviews only. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude use different crawlers and sources, so a Google result says nothing about them.
