Free AI Visibility Checker: Does AI Name Your Brand?

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

A free AI visibility check asks AI assistants the questions your buyers ask. It records whether each answer names your brand, leaves it out, or describes it wrongly. You can run one by hand with three buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google. The result is a snapshot, not a score. Some answers used live search and some did not, and the next run can differ.

Key takeaways

  • A free check gives one of three findings per answer: named, missing, or named with wrong facts, and each points to a different fix.
  • Test buyer questions that don't contain your brand name, with memory and personalization switched off.
  • Always record whether the answer searched the web, because a search-off answer comes from model memory frozen at a cutoff date.
  • When you're missing from search-on answers, check access first: robots.txt per bot, firewall or CDN blocks, and content that only appears after JavaScript runs.
  • One check averages search-on and search-off answers, so treat it as a snapshot to act on, not a number to chase.

What a free AI visibility check tells you

A free check answers one narrow question. When a buyer asks an AI assistant something you'd want to win, does the answer name you, and does it describe you correctly?

It doesn't tell you why, and it doesn't predict next week. It gives you three kinds of finding: you're named, you're missing, or you're named with wrong facts. Each one leads to a different next move.

The questions matter more than the tool. Pick questions a buyer types before they know your name. "Best payroll software for a 20-person agency" is a buyer question. "What is [your brand]?" tests something else: whether the model knows you at all. Run both if you like, but judge yourself on the first kind.

If your brand name is also an ordinary word, read how to track a common-word brand first, because a plain search for your name in the answers will count false hits. For the full list of what a checker can examine, see what an AI brand checker actually checks.

How to run the check by hand

You need a spreadsheet and the apps themselves. Platform behavior below is as of October 2026.

  1. Write three buyer questions. Say you run a dental clinic in Austin. Your questions might be "Which dentists in Austin do same-day crowns?", "Best family dentist in south Austin" and "Austin dentist open Saturdays that takes Delta Dental".
  2. Switch off personalization. Log out of ChatGPT or use a Temporary Chat. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query, so a logged-in test reflects your history, not a buyer's.
  3. Ask each question in a fresh chat on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Then search the same question on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears.
  4. Record whether the answer searched the web. Visible cited links mean it did. In Claude.ai, web search is a user toggle, so note its setting. If Google shows no AI Overview, log "no overview", not "not named".
  5. Log the same fields for every answer, as below.
  6. Repeat on another day. The same question can return a different answer, so one run is one sample.
Field What to write
Named? Yes or no
Facts stated Price, location, products, anything specific
Cited URLs Every link the answer shows
Search on? Yes, no, or unknown

If ChatGPT matters most to you, the step-by-step ChatGPT brand mention check covers that app in more detail.

How to read a mention, an absence and a wrong description

Named

Look at the cited links. If the answer cites your own site, your pages are reachable for that engine. If it cites a directory or a review site, that third-party page carried you into the answer. Note which facts it used, because those are the facts it will repeat.

Not named

An absence is something to check, not a verdict. Split it by search state.

  • Search off: the answer came from model memory. OpenAI lists a February 16, 2026 knowledge cutoff for its GPT-5.6 models and August 31, 2025 for the Instant path. Nothing you publish this quarter reaches that answer.
  • Search on: check access first. Does robots.txt allow the search bots? Blocking GPTBot only stops training use. OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says each setting is independent.

Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Then check two quieter blocks. A firewall or CDN can turn away a crawler that robots.txt allows. And content that only appears after JavaScript runs may be invisible: Vercel found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them.

If the answer cites other sites' lists instead of yours, being named on those sites is the route into the answer. The evidence shows a strong association there, not a guaranteed effect.

Named, but wrong

This is the most urgent finding. Write down the exact wrong fact. Then check your own site for the same fact stated two different ways, such as an old price on one page and a new one on another. State the correct fact as a plain sentence in HTML that loads without JavaScript. That gives the engine a sentence it can quote, though it doesn't guarantee the answer changes. If AI mixes you up with a similarly named company, follow the brand conflation playbook. For a structured pass over wrong facts, run the free AI hallucination check.

What one check cannot tell you

One check is a snapshot of a moving system. Retrieval is decided per question. ChatGPT searches at the model's discretion, Claude.ai search depends on a toggle, and Google AI Overviews often don't trigger. Any blended result averages search-on and search-off answers, and you can't always tell which you got.

You also test the prompt, not the query that ran. OpenAI says ChatGPT search typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries before sending them out.

There is no rank to read either. Google's own reporting for AI features shows impressions only, so AI rank checkers have nothing to validate a position against. And the July 2026 critical survey of 45 GEO studies found no technique with a stable, cross-platform causal effect on discoverability.

So don't chase the number. A visibility score summarizes one sample. What you control is access, rendering and the facts on your own pages. What the models finally say is not in your control.

The faster route: run the free checker

The manual method takes a spreadsheet and patience. The free checker on this site runs the same test for you: up to three buyer questions, either your own or written from your homepage, with each answer scored on one scale. It's still a snapshot, with the same limits as a hand check.

If you want the answers rerun on a schedule, that's tracking rather than checking. Read the difference between a checker and a tracker before deciding which you need. You can also run the same idea from the AI Visibility Checker on 99Visibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check AI visibility for free without any tool?

Yes. Write three buyer questions that don't include your brand name. Ask each one in a fresh, logged-out chat on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, then search it on Google. Record whether you're named, what facts are stated, which links are cited, and whether the answer searched the web. Repeat on another day, because one run is one sample.

Why does the same AI assistant give a different answer each time?

Several things change between runs. The app may or may not search the web for that question. It may rewrite your question into different search queries. It may route you to a different model with a different knowledge cutoff. Logged-in memory can also shape the query. That's why a single answer is a sample, and why you should log search state for every result.

Does allowing GPTBot help ChatGPT name my brand?

Not in search answers. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler for ChatGPT search, and says each setting is independent. Allowing GPTBot buys no search visibility, and blocking it doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search. If you want to be eligible for ChatGPT search answers, OAI-SearchBot is the one to allow, along with a firewall that lets it through.

What should I fix first after a check?

Fix wrong facts and access problems before anything else. Wrong facts cost you with buyers who are already looking at you. Access problems, such as a robots.txt block, a firewall returning 403 to AI crawlers, or content that needs JavaScript to appear, keep your pages out of search-on answers entirely. Both are in your control, and both can be checked directly.
