Impressions: definition for search and AI features

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 4 min read

An impression is one instance of a result from your site being shown to a user. In Google Search Console, impressions count how often your pages appeared in search results, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of October 2026, Google's generative AI report shows impressions only, with no clicks, click-through rate or position. It tells you a page was displayed, not whether anyone visited.

What an impression is

An impression is a display event. Your result appeared on a page a user was shown. Nothing more is implied.

In classic Google Search reporting, impressions sit next to clicks, click-through rate (CTR) and average position. Together those four numbers let you see how often you were shown, how often people chose you, and roughly where you appeared.

For AI features, that set is incomplete. The impression is the only one of the four Google currently reports.

How impressions work for AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's generative AI performance report in Search Console counts impressions for pages shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of October 2026, its dimensions are pages, countries, dates and devices. It has no clicks, no CTR and no position.

A page earns these impressions by appearing as a supporting link in an AI answer. Google's AI features documentation says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to qualify, and that there are no additional technical requirements. It also says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use different models and techniques", so the two surfaces can show different links for the same topic.

The report is UI-only. The Search Analytics API does not cover this surface. For a walkthrough of reading it, see using Search Console's Generative AI report.

Why impressions matter for AI visibility

Impressions are the only first-party measure Google gives you for its AI surfaces. That makes them useful for three things:

  • Presence. Zero impressions on a page you expected to appear is a signal to check eligibility: noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 or data-nosnippet can all keep content out of AI answers.
  • Trend by page. You can see which URLs Google shows in AI features and how that changes over time.
  • Segmentation. Country and device splits show where display happens.

What impressions cannot tell you is whether AI visibility produced a visit, a lead or a sale. Without clicks there is no way to measure that from this report. Pair it with your own analytics, and read whether Search Console shows AI Overview clicks before promising anyone a traffic figure.

Common misconceptions

  • "Impressions mean people read my page." They mean your link was shown. Reading and clicking are separate events Google does not report here.
  • "Impressions equal citations." Third-party trackers count citations in answers to prompts they chose. Search Console counts displays to real users. The numbers measure different things, as covered in AI Overview impressions vs citations.
  • "I can track my AI rank." Google exposes no position for AI features, so no third-party rank number can be checked against Google data.
  • "A drop means I lost visibility." Sometimes the data is wrong. Google confirmed a bug that depressed impressions in its performance reports from around 12 to 13 August 2026. Check known issues first, as explained in why AI impressions drop suddenly.
  • "I must opt in to appear." Inclusion is the default. Search Console has an opt-out control that child properties can inherit, covered in Google's AI features control.

More on this

Does Search Console show which searches triggered my AI Overview impressions? As of October 2026, the generative AI report's documented dimensions are pages, countries, dates and devices. There is no query dimension, so you can see which pages were shown but not the searches behind them. Bing Webmaster Tools is the one surface that exposes grounding queries for Microsoft's AI answers. More detail is in [which searches triggered AI Overview impressions](/questions/search-console-ai-overview-queries).

Can I get AI Overview impressions through the Search Console API? No. As of October 2026 the generative AI report is available in the Search Console interface only. The Search Analytics API returns classic search data with clicks, CTR and position, but it does not cover the AI Overviews and AI Mode surface. Exporting from the interface is the only first-party route.

Can I do anything to raise AI Overview impressions? You control eligibility, not selection. Make sure the page is indexed, Googlebot can crawl it, and no snippet controls block display. Google says there are no special optimizations needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it does not guarantee indexing or serving. Fixing a block can restore impressions; nothing guarantees new ones.

Why do my AI impressions differ from my AI tracker's numbers? They count different events. Search Console counts how often real users were shown your page in Google's AI features. A tracker counts how often your brand or URL appeared in answers to a fixed set of prompts it ran. A prompt set is a sample, so expect the two numbers to diverge.
