How can a startup with no press coverage get mentioned by AI?
99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read
There is no shortcut. Large, well-known brands dominate AI citations, and nothing a startup publishes changes that overnight. What you control is narrower: make sure AI crawlers can reach and read your site, state specific facts (price, category, location) on pages they can fetch, and earn honest mentions on the pages engines already cite for your buyers' questions. Skip mass publishing. It can cost you Google entirely.
The full answer: control access, facts and third-party mentions
A startup with no press can get mentioned by AI, but only through the parts of the system it controls. It helps to separate four stages.
- Parametric: what a model knows with no web access. It is frozen at a training cutoff, and nobody can change it this quarter.
- Access: whether a crawler may fetch and store your pages. This is fully in your control.
- Retrieval: whether your page enters the model's context for a given question. You influence this indirectly, mostly through topical fit and where you are listed.
- Generation: which retrieved pages the model uses and cites. The model decides.
For a new brand, retrieval-on answers are the only realistic route. If you are wondering whether a model already knows you, read whether ChatGPT can know a new company. The short version: OpenAI lists a February 16, 2026 knowledge cutoff for its GPT-5.6 models and August 31, 2025 for the Instant path, so anything newer only reaches answers through live search.
So the path is three moves: pass the access gates, state specific facts where crawlers can read them, and get named on the pages engines already pull from.
Why big brands dominate AI answers
Be realistic about the starting line. A 2025 study of AI search citations (arXiv:2507.05301) found the top 20 most frequent news sources accounted for 67.3% of all citations for OpenAI models. That data covers March to May 2025, but the pattern is consistent elsewhere: Semrush's index of 126 million prompts found just 36 brands visible across all four surfaces it tracked every month, names like YouTube, Reddit and Amazon.
Brand prominence is a strong association with citation, and no publisher lever moves it directly. Domain authority scores and E-E-A-T scores are not levers either: no engine computes Domain Authority, and Google says E-E-A-T isn't a specific ranking factor.
What it means for you: compete on specific buyer questions where big brands have little to say, not on broad category terms they already own.
Pass the access gates first
These are the levers with the strongest evidence, and they work by removing blocks. Check each one.
- Per-bot robots.txt permission. OpenAI documents that
OAI-SearchBotcontrols ChatGPT search andGPTBotcontrols training only, and each setting is independent. A blanket AI block can silently remove you from ChatGPT search. Also checkPerplexityBot,Claude-SearchBotandMeta-WebIndexer. Meta states that allowing Meta-WebIndexer helps it cite your content, covered in getting cited in Meta AI. - Firewall and CDN. OpenAI says eligibility also requires your host or CDN to allow its search crawler's published IP addresses. A robots.txt that says yes can sit behind a firewall that returns 403. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones get turned away.
- Server-side rendering. Vercel found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. If your pricing or product description only appears after JavaScript runs, those crawlers may not see it.
- Index eligibility. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Check for stray
noindex,nosnippetordata-nosnippettags.
A brand-new domain has its own wrinkles, covered in whether a new website can get cited.
State specific facts on pages crawlers can fetch
Once crawlers can read you, give them something quotable. Stating a specific fact (a price, a number, a one-line definition) on a fetchable page is the only positive experimental signal the evidence shows for on-page content.
Say you run a hypothetical bookkeeping startup for dental clinics. A sentence like "Plans start at $199 a month for clinics with up to 10 staff" gives an engine a clean claim. A paragraph about "transforming financial operations" gives it nothing.
Keep the same facts consistent across your homepage, pricing page and about page. Contradictions are a plausible reason AI gets details wrong.
Don't spend time on rewrites for "AI-friendly" style, chunking or llms.txt. Google's optimization guide says you don't need to write in a specific way for generative AI search, and that Google Search ignores AI text files.
Earn honest mentions on pages engines already cite
When engines cite other sites instead of yours, being named on those sites is the route into the answer. The evidence shows an association here, not a guaranteed effect.
Start by finding which pages appear as sources for your buyers' questions: comparison articles, directories, review roundups, community threads. Then earn a place on them honestly, by pitching the author, submitting to the directory, or answering where you have real expertise. The playbook for getting listed on cited pages walks through the process, and the guide to third-party mentions explains why unlinked mentions still count as a brand mention. If you are weighing paid announcements, see whether press releases help.
Do not mass-publish. OtterlyAI put about 1,000 AI-generated posts on each of two new domains in 2026. Google deindexed one after about 14 days and the other after about 90, with no manual action notice, and Google's AI surfaces then almost never cited them. Google's spam policy names this pattern as scaled content abuse. Planting hidden instructions for AI crawlers on third-party pages is also illegitimate and a reputational risk.
What to do this month
- Audit robots.txt bot by bot and test that your firewall lets AI crawlers through.
- Confirm your price, category and location appear in the raw HTML.
- Check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools separately for index status.
- List the pages engines cite for five buyer questions and pick three to earn a mention on.
- Measure each engine separately. The free checker on this site shows a snapshot of whether engines name you for up to three buyer questions.
What you can't control: which pages a model retrieves, whether it searches at all, and what it says. You can fix what blocks you.
How long does it take a new brand to show up in ChatGPT? Nobody can give a reliable timeline. Training-based knowledge only changes with a new model, and OpenAI's current GPT-5.6 cutoff is February 16, 2026. Search-based answers can pick you up sooner once OAI-SearchBot can reach you, but ChatGPT decides per question whether to search at all. Treat any promised timeline as a guess.
Should I allow GPTBot so ChatGPT can find me? Allowing GPTBot is a training decision, not a search one. OpenAI's crawler documentation says GPTBot governs training use, while OAI-SearchBot controls whether you can appear in ChatGPT search answers, and each setting is independent. You can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. For visibility in ChatGPT search, OAI-SearchBot is the one to check.
Will adding schema markup get my startup cited? The evidence says no. Google states structured data isn't required for generative AI search. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages adding schema against matched controls and found AI Overview citations fell 4.6%. Those pages were already heavily cited, so the effect on new brands is untested, not proven. Existing markup does no harm, but it is not a lever for AI answers.
Is Reddit or community discussion worth the effort? It can be, if those threads are among the pages engines cite for your buyers' questions and you take part honestly. Being named on cited third-party pages is associated with appearing in answers, with no guaranteed effect. Fake accounts or planted praise are a risk to your reputation and can be removed by moderators, so only participate where you have something genuinely useful to add.
