AI Startup Visibility: Why AI Assistants Miss or Mix Up New AI Companies
99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 7 min read
Short answer
AI assistants miss young AI startups for two reasons. Answers given without live search come from training data frozen at a knowledge cutoff, and a company founded after it does not exist there. Answers given with search depend on crawlers reaching your site and on other sites naming you. Similar product names make conflation likely. You control access and fetchable facts. Nobody controls training data on a startup timeline.
Key takeaways
- A startup founded after a model's knowledge cutoff is absent from that model's search-off answers, and no publisher action changes that this quarter.
- Search-on answers are where a new startup can appear, so crawler access, server-rendered content and index eligibility come first.
- Brand conflation is common for AI startups with generic names, and a one-line definition of what you are, stated on a fetchable page, gives engines a sentence to quote.
- Being named on the third-party sites engines already cite (launch directories, marketplaces, comparison pages) is associated with appearing in answers, with no guaranteed effect.
- Allowing GPTBot is not a shortcut: it governs training only, and ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot.
Why AI assistants miss new AI startups
Every model has a knowledge cutoff, the date its training data stops. OpenAI's model documentation, checked in August 2026, listed a February 16, 2026 cutoff for the GPT-5.6 family and August 31, 2025 for the Instant path used in ChatGPT. If your startup launched in spring 2026, a search-off answer from either model has never seen you.
That is the parametric stage, and nobody controls it on a startup timeline. The only route into it is a future model trained on data that includes you. That lands a full model generation later, and no vendor publishes whether it happened.
The stage you can influence is retrieval. As of October 2026, ChatGPT search runs at the model's discretion, Claude search is a user toggle, and Google AI Overviews often do not trigger. So the same buyer question can get a search-on or a search-off answer. Our guide to search on vs search off answers explains why they differ.
What this means: stop trying to get into the model and start making sure the live web can find and describe you. A critical survey of 45 GEO studies (arXiv, July 2026) found no technique with a stable, cross-platform causal effect on discoverability. The levers with evidence are access levers.
The prompts your buyers ask AI assistants
AI startup buyers are often technical and already use AI tools daily. They ask category questions, then due-diligence questions. Test both kinds. Here are realistic examples, written for a hypothetical startup that builds AI meeting notes:
- "What are the best AI tools for summarizing sales calls?"
- "Alternatives to [incumbent] for automatic meeting notes"
- "[YourStartup] vs [competitor]: pricing and features"
- "Does [YourStartup] train on my data?"
- "Which LLM does [YourStartup] use under the hood?"
- "Is [YourStartup] SOC 2 compliant?"
- "Is [YourStartup] the same company as [similarly named product]?"
Category prompts test whether you get named at all. Brand prompts test whether what gets said is correct. For a new company, brand prompts often surface conflation first.
Engines also rewrite prompts. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries. Treat any prompt list as a sample of what buyers ask, not the exact input the engine runs.
Which engines matter in this buying journey
Check each engine separately. They draw on different indexes, and a blended score hides the gaps.
- ChatGPT: search inclusion depends on OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot. OpenAI's crawler page says each setting is independent.
- Perplexity: indexes through PerplexityBot and cites whole sources.
- Claude: uses Claude-SearchBot for search quality, separate from the ClaudeBot training crawler.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There are no additional technical requirements.
- Microsoft Copilot: grounds on the Bing index, so Bing Webmaster Tools status matters on its own.
For a startup, the practical order is: confirm each crawler can reach you, then confirm each index holds you. A healthy Google index tells you nothing about Bing, and the reverse.
Third-party sites worth checking
When engines cite other sites instead of yours, being named on those sites is the route into the answer. The evidence shows a strong association, not a promised effect. Citations also concentrate: a study of AI search citing patterns (arXiv, data from March to May 2025) found the top 20 news sources accounted for 67.3% of citations for OpenAI models.
A startup without press can still check the places that describe new AI products:
- Launch directories and AI tool directories where you listed at launch
- Integration marketplaces and app stores for the platforms you plug into
- Your GitHub organisation and package registry pages
- Comparison and "alternatives to" pages in your category
- Community threads where buyers compare tools
For each one, check three things. Is the listing still live? Does it use your current name and one-line description? Does it link to your real domain? Stale launch listings often carry a pre-pivot description that engines keep quoting. Our answer on getting mentioned without press coverage covers this route in more depth.
When you look at an AI answer, note which URLs it cites. Those are the pages to correct first.
Facts AI gets wrong about AI startups
Brand conflation happens when an engine merges you with a company that has a similar name. AI startups are exposed because names cluster around the same words. Say you run a hypothetical startup called Quillmark AI. An engine might borrow the pricing, founders or funding of an older product called Quillmark.
The facts to check first for this kind of business:
- What you are: category, and whether you are a product, an API or an open-source project
- Pricing: startup pricing changes fast, and old tiers linger in cited pages
- Name history: a rename or pivot leaves the old name in directories
- Data handling: whether you train on customer data, and certifications you hold
- Underlying models: which LLMs power the product
- Founders and ownership: the most visible conflation error
The fix with the only positive experimental signal is plain: state each fact as a specific sentence on a page engines can fetch. Put "Quillmark AI is a meeting-notes tool for sales teams, founded in 2026, not affiliated with Quillmark" on your homepage and about page. Then make sure the pricing page states the same numbers as the footer and the docs. Our playbook on fixing AI brand confusion walks through the full process.
Access checks before anything else
Fetchable facts only help if crawlers can fetch them. Run these checks in order.
Server-side rendering
Many AI startup sites ship as client-rendered JavaScript apps. Vercel's crawler study found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but do not execute them, so they cannot read client-side rendered content. Load your homepage and pricing page with JavaScript off. If the definition and prices vanish, AI crawlers see an empty page.
robots.txt, per bot
A blanket AI block is a common error. It removes ChatGPT search eligibility along with training. Allowing retrieval bots while blocking training looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
Firewall and CDN
A firewall or CDN can return 403 to a crawler that robots.txt allows. OpenAI's help centre says eligibility needs both the robots.txt permission and a host or CDN that accepts its published searchbot IP addresses. Cloudflare changed its defaults on September 15, 2026 for some sites, blocking training and agent crawlers on pages that display ads while search stays allowed. Check your zone settings. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones your firewall turns away.
Suppression controls
Search your templates for noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet. Any of them keeps content out of AI answers. Launch-stage staging tags sometimes survive into production.
A 30-day plan
Days 1 to 7: baseline
Run your prompt list on each engine, logged out, and record what each one says and cites. The free checker on this site gives a snapshot for up to three buyer questions. Run a knowledge cutoff check to see which of your milestones fall after each model's cutoff.
Days 8 to 14: access
Fix JavaScript-only content on the homepage, pricing, about and docs pages. Correct robots.txt per bot. Test your CDN against each crawler. Remove stray suppression tags.
Days 15 to 21: facts
Write the one-line definition, including the disambiguation sentence if conflation showed up. Reconcile pricing, founding year and data-handling statements across every page.
Days 22 to 30: third parties and indexes
Update stale directory and marketplace listings. Confirm index status in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools separately. Then rerun the baseline prompts and compare.
Expect search-on answers to move first and search-off answers not at all until a new model ships. Our answer on how long AI takes to update brand info explains the timing. No step here guarantees a citation. It removes what blocks you.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get my startup into ChatGPT's training data faster?
No route exists on a startup timeline. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, and allowing it only indicates your content may be used in future training. OpenAI claims no search benefit from it, and nobody has measured whether inclusion changes what a model says about a brand. Any effect would arrive a full model generation later. Spend the effort on search-on answers, which read the live web.
Should I block GPTBot if I want to stay out of training?
You can, and it will not remove you from ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler documentation says each setting is independent: a site can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in search results while disallowing GPTBot for training. The mistake to avoid is a blanket rule that blocks every AI user agent, which also blocks the search crawlers that let engines cite you.
Will schema markup or an llms.txt file help a new startup get found?
The evidence does not support either as a lever for AI answers. Google says structured data is not required for its generative AI features and that Google Search ignores llms.txt. Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overviews citations fell 4.6% after pages added schema, though those pages were already heavily cited. Existing markup does no harm. It just should not be your plan.
What if AI still describes our old product after a pivot?
Find the source first. If the answer cites pages, those pages hold the old description: usually a launch directory, an old comparison article or your own archived blog. Update or redirect what you control and ask third parties to correct listings. If the answer cites nothing, it may be coming from training data, which only a newer model will change.
Do AI assistants treat a startup differently from an established brand?
No engine documents a startup penalty. The evidence does show citations concentrate on prominent sources and brands, and that association is the main confounder in most GEO studies. A young company starts with fewer pages naming it. That is why third-party listings and accurate fetchable facts on your own site matter more for you than for an incumbent.
