Do press releases help my brand show up in AI answers?

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

Not by themselves. The evidence shows an association, with no promised effect: when AI engines cite other sites for a question, being named on those sites is how brands get into the answer. A wire release is your own text on a distribution site. It is not coverage on a page engines already retrieve. Find the pages engines cite for your buyer questions, then earn genuine mentions there.

The full answer: distribution is not coverage

A press release can only change an AI answer through two routes. Either a page carrying it is retrieved when someone asks a question, or it ends up in a future model's training data.

Those map to two different stages:

  • Parametric (training): what the model knows with no web access. It is frozen at a cutoff. OpenAI documents a Feb 16, 2026 cutoff for its GPT-5.6 models and Aug 31, 2025 for the Instant path used in ChatGPT. Nothing you publish this quarter reaches those answers.
  • Retrieval: the engine searches, pulls a few pages into its context, and cites some of them. This is where coverage can matter now.

A wire release sits on a distribution site under your own words. Whether engines retrieve that page for your buyer questions is unmeasured in the evidence we hold. A feature or a list mention on a page the engine already cites is a different thing: it puts your name inside a source that is already in the answer. That is why the useful question is not "should we send a release" but "which pages do engines cite, and are we named on them".

What the evidence says about earned media and AI citations

Citations are concentrated. A study of AI Search Arena data from March to May 2025 found that the top 20 most frequent news sources accounted for 67.3% of all citations for OpenAI models. That data is now over a year old, but the pattern is the point: a small set of sources carries most of the weight. Our digest of news source citing patterns covers the study in detail.

Two caveats keep this honest:

  • It is association, not cause. Large brands get covered more and cited more. No study isolates the effect of one mention.
  • The page must be reachable and indexed. Google says a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. In Otterly's 2026 experiment, Google's AI surfaces stopped citing sites after Google deindexed them, while Microsoft Copilot kept citing them from Bing. An engine cannot cite what its index no longer holds.

So coverage helps only when it lands on a page each engine can fetch, index and retrieve.

How to find the pages engines cite for your questions

Start with the questions a buyer actually asks, not your brand name.

  1. Write five to ten buyer questions, for example "best payroll software for a 20-person agency" (a hypothetical).
  2. Run each one on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. Use a logged-out session with memory off, so personal context does not skew the answer.
  3. Record every cited URL and whether your brand was named.
  4. Group the URLs by site. Review sites, trade publications, comparison lists and forums usually repeat.
  5. Repeat monthly. Answers change, and retrieval fires at the engine's discretion.

One limit matters. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries before searching, so your prompt is a proxy for what the engine really ran. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report is the one place that shows the grounding queries behind citations of your own site.

If you want a quick baseline first, the free checker on this site shows whether engines name you for up to three buyer questions.

How to earn a genuine mention on those pages

Once you have the list, treat each cited page as a target with its own editor and reason to exist.

  • Pitch the page, not the wire. Contact the writer of the cited comparison or roundup. Offer something they can use: data, a customer count you can verify, a clear differentiator.
  • Give a quotable fact. A specific price, number or one-line definition gives an engine a sentence it can lift. It is the only on-page signal with positive experimental support.
  • Keep your own facts consistent. If your pricing differs between your site and the article, engines can repeat either version.
  • Check access on the host. A mention inside content that only appears after JavaScript runs may be invisible to most AI crawlers.

The PR for AI answers playbook walks through pitching in more depth, and AI visibility for PR agencies covers reporting it to clients. If you have no press yet, read how a startup with no coverage gets mentioned. Forums often appear in the same citation lists, so see whether Reddit discussion helps.

Edge cases and what nobody controls

Some things are outside your reach, and it helps to say so plainly.

  • Retrieval-off answers lag. If the engine answers from memory, new coverage waits for a model with a later cutoff. Our free knowledge cutoff check compares your news dates against model cutoffs.
  • Selection is the engine's call. Even a cited page can be retrieved for one query and dropped for the next.
  • Manipulation is a risk, not a tactic. Research shows injected instructions in web content can sway LLM search agents once retrieved. Hidden text or prompt injection in releases is illegitimate, and third parties can use it against you. Watch pages that mention your brand for it.

What you control: being worth naming, being named on the right pages, and making sure those pages can be fetched.

More on this

Do syndicated wire release copies get cited by AI engines? The evidence we hold does not measure it either way. Treat it as a question to check, not a tactic to assume. Run your buyer questions after a release goes out and look for the wire URLs among the citations. If they never appear, the release did not reach the answer through retrieval, and earned coverage on already-cited pages is the better use of effort.

How long before new coverage shows up in AI answers? There is no fixed timeline. For answers where the engine searches the web, coverage can appear once the host page is crawled and indexed by that engine. For answers from model memory, it waits until a model with a later knowledge cutoff ships. As of October 2026, ChatGPT's Instant path still carries an Aug 31, 2025 cutoff, so recent news cannot reach those answers.

Should I ping IndexNow after publishing a press release? It is harmless Bing-scoped hygiene, but do not expect it to move AI answers. The IndexNow specification never mentions AI, a 200 response confirms only that the ping was received, and Google does not consume it. See our [free IndexNow setup guide](/free/free-indexnow-setup) for what it does and does not do.

How do I know whether a PR push changed AI answers? Run the same buyer questions on each engine before and after, in logged-out sessions, and score each engine separately. A blended number hides the fact that one engine may cite a page while others ignore it. Record which cited URLs now name you. Expect noise: engines decide per query whether to search, so look for patterns across several weeks, not one result.
