Do I need to rank on Google to show up in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI does not document Google rankings as an input to ChatGPT search. ChatGPT fetches pages with its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, sometimes queries partner search providers, and rewrites your question into its own searches. Google rank matters for Google's AI surfaces, not ChatGPT's. The gate you control for ChatGPT is access: OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt, your CDN letting OpenAI's IP addresses through, and key content present in the raw HTML.
The short answer: Google rank is not ChatGPT's gate
You don't need a Google ranking to appear in ChatGPT search. ChatGPT and Google are separate systems with separate crawlers, separate indexes and separate rules.
OpenAI's crawler page says it plainly: "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." That sentence names the gate. It is OpenAI's crawler, not your position on Google.
This cuts both ways. A site that ranks first on Google can still be missing from ChatGPT if its robots.txt or firewall turns OAI-SearchBot away. A site with no Google traffic can still be eligible for ChatGPT if OpenAI's crawler can fetch it.
What it means: stop treating Google rank as a proxy for ChatGPT visibility. The next move is to check whether ChatGPT can reach you at all. Our page on what OpenAI discloses about ChatGPT ranking covers the rest of the picture.
How ChatGPT search finds pages, as of October 2026
Three documented mechanisms shape what ChatGPT retrieves.
- Its own crawler. OAI-SearchBot is "used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features," per OpenAI's bots page. GPTBot is a different bot, used for training only. OpenAI says "each setting is independent of the others."
- Partner providers. OpenAI's help centre says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers." The provider named in OpenAI's documentation traces to Microsoft, in 2024-era wording. Google is not documented as one. See whether ChatGPT uses Bing for the detail.
- Query rewriting. ChatGPT "typically rewrites your query into one or more targeted queries" before sending them out. The query a user types is not the query that retrieves pages.
On ranking, OpenAI's full disclosure is that ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors" and "placement is not guaranteed." No factor is named, Google position included.
Search is also optional per question. ChatGPT decides when to search. When it doesn't, it answers from training data with a fixed cutoff, and no crawler setting changes that answer this quarter.
What Otterly's test showed about ranking elsewhere
OtterlyAI ran a public test in 2026 with two new sites, each loaded with about 1,000 AI-generated posts. Google deindexed both. Bing kept them, and Otterly reports combined Bing impressions of 119,935 in July.
Microsoft Copilot, which grounds on Bing, cited the sites heavily. ChatGPT cited them effectively zero times, even while ChatGPT's crawlers kept visiting and the sites ranked in Bing.
The lesson: ranking in a search index ChatGPT might draw on did not produce ChatGPT citations. Being reachable and indexed is necessary. It is not sufficient.
Keep the limits in view. It was one pair of sites, on a low-competition topic, run by a vendor that sells AI visibility tracking. It shows a single outcome, not a rule. The Bing index vs Google index comparison sets out which AI answers draw on which index.
Where Google rank does still matter
Google rank is relevant to Google's own AI features. Google states that a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Ahrefs found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 results (March 2026). That is a real overlap, but most citations came from outside the top 10. The Ahrefs top-10 study digest explains the method and its limits.
None of that transfers to ChatGPT. Treat each engine as its own channel, and don't expect a single organic ranking to describe all of them.
What to check instead
These are the parts of ChatGPT visibility you control. Each one removes a block rather than adding a boost.
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. You can still block training separately:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /
- Confirm your firewall or CDN lets OpenAI in. OpenAI says eligibility means allowing OAI-SearchBot "and" confirming your host or CDN allows traffic from its published searchbot IP addresses. A robots.txt allow means nothing behind a 403. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones get turned away.
- Put key facts in the raw HTML. Vercel found ChatGPT's crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. Prices, product names and definitions that appear only after JavaScript runs may be invisible.
- State specific facts plainly. A clear price or one-line definition on a fetchable page gives the engine a sentence it can quote.
None of this guarantees a citation. It makes sure nothing on your side is stopping one.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT search? No. GPTBot governs whether your content may be used to train OpenAI's models. OAI-SearchBot governs ChatGPT search. OpenAI says each setting is independent, so you can block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot. Allowing GPTBot also gives no documented search benefit. If ChatGPT search is your goal, the bot to check is OAI-SearchBot.
Can I track my position in ChatGPT the way I track Google rank? Not in any verifiable way. OpenAI publishes no position data and says only that it ranks results using multiple factors, with placement not guaranteed. ChatGPT also rewrites queries and searches at its own discretion, so answers vary. Our guide on [why position isn't the metric](/guides/ai-seo-ranking) explains what you can measure instead, such as whether you are named and whether facts are right.
Why does ChatGPT mention my brand without linking to my site? Often ChatGPT answered without searching. In that case it draws on training data frozen at a cutoff, so it can name a brand it learned about earlier without fetching any page. As of October 2026, OpenAI lists a February 16, 2026 cutoff for the GPT-5.6 family and August 31, 2025 for the Instant path. Nothing you change today reaches those answers.
Should I stop doing SEO if I care about ChatGPT? No. SEO still drives Google Search and relates to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. The point is that Google work doesn't cover ChatGPT. Run both checks: your Google index and snippet eligibility for Google's surfaces, and OAI-SearchBot access plus server-rendered content for ChatGPT. One being healthy tells you nothing about the other.
