Do I need an AI visibility tool if I already use an SEO tool?

Usually yes, if you need to know what AI engines actually say about you. SEO tools track classic rankings. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or position. Neither shows the answer text, whether the facts about you are right, or how each engine differs. Fix crawler access first with free checks, then track accuracy and per-engine answers if those decisions matter to you.
The short answer and why
An SEO tool and an AI visibility tool answer different questions. Your SEO suite tells you where a page ranks in classic results and who links to it. It does not read the answers that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini or Google AI Overviews give your buyers.
That gap matters for two reasons. First, AI engines can describe your brand wrongly: an old price, a retired product, a competitor's feature. Second, each engine retrieves from a different place, so being fine in one tells you little about another.
Strong rankings help, but they are not a proxy for AI answers. Ahrefs found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the first 10 results (March 2026). The rest came from further down or outside the top 100. If you want the longer version of that argument, see whether strong SEO already makes you visible in AI search.
So the decision comes down to this: do you need to know what the answers say, engine by engine? If yes, you need something beyond your SEO tool.
What your SEO tool and Search Console actually show
Here is what the tools you probably already pay for cover, as of October 2026.
| Tool | What it shows for AI search | What it misses |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console generative AI report | Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, date and device | Clicks, CTR, position, the answer text, other engines |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Citations, cited pages and the grounding queries Copilot actually ran | Non-Microsoft engines, answer accuracy. No API |
| Third-party SEO suites | Classic rankings, links, sometimes AI Overview presence | Ranking ground truth for AI surfaces, answer accuracy |
Google's report is useful but thin. It cannot tell you whether AI impressions produced any traffic, and it is not exposed through the Search Analytics API, which is why AI visibility tools can't pull Search Console's AI report. Google also confirmed a bug that depressed impressions from around 12 August 2026, so read trends from that window with care. The Search Console generative AI report playbook covers how to use it anyway.
Google's own page on third-party SEO tools states they "don't have access to our internal ranking data." Any tool selling an "AI rank" for Google is reporting a number nobody can verify.
Bing's report is the only place that shows grounding queries, meaning the searches the AI actually ran rather than the prompts a tracker guessed. Few teams check it. The Bing vs Google index comparison explains which AI answers draw on which index.
Why accuracy and per-engine answers need separate tracking
Engines behave so differently that a blended view hides the story. In OtterlyAI's 2026 experiment, Microsoft Copilot produced 2,718 of the 3,934 citations tracked for one test site. ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode almost never cited it. Microsoft's own report counted 42,817 citations for the same site, so a prompt tracker sees a sample, not the whole.
Retrieval also varies by query. ChatGPT rewrites a user's prompt into one or more targeted searches, and it decides when to search at all. When it does not search, it answers from training data with a fixed knowledge cutoff. That is where stale facts about your brand come from.
No SEO tool reads those answers. Tracking accuracy separately is worth it if any of these apply:
- Your pricing, plans or product names changed in the last year.
- Buyers in your category ask AI assistants for shortlists before they visit a site.
- You have a competitor with a similar name.
- Sales hears prospects repeat claims about you that are wrong.
What an AI visibility tool cannot tell you either
Be clear-eyed before you buy anything. An AI visibility tool asks a set of prompts it chose and records the answers. Real retrieval queries are mostly invisible from outside, so every prompt set is a proxy.
A single cross-engine score also averages answers given with and without live search. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode "may use different models and techniques," so even two Google surfaces are not one number. Look for tools that report each engine separately and show the answer text.
No tool controls what models say. A tool can show you a wrong fact and point to the cause. It cannot promise citations or a score.
How to decide, and what to do this week
Start with the checks that cost nothing, because access problems block everything else.
- Open the generative AI report in Search Console and note which pages get AI impressions.
- Confirm your property has not been opted out of Google's AI features, including by inheritance from a parent property. See Google's AI features control.
- Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and export grounding queries.
- Check robots.txt per bot.
OAI-SearchBotcontrols ChatGPT search, whileGPTBotgoverns training only. - Check that your firewall or CDN lets AI crawlers through. A 403 to a crawler that robots.txt allows is a silent failure. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each crawler and shows which ones get turned away.
- Make sure key facts like pricing are in the HTML before JavaScript runs.
Then look at the answers themselves. The free checker on this site shows whether engines name you for up to three buyer questions. If what you see is wrong or missing, ongoing per-engine tracking is worth paying for. If your agency already handles this, ask them whether their scope covers AI search.
Can Search Console show my position in AI Overviews? No. As of October 2026, the generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions only for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It has no clicks, no CTR and no position dimension. Google describes further metrics only as a future intention. Any tool claiming to report your position inside a Google AI answer has no first-party data to validate that number against.
Do SEO tools that track AI Overviews replace an AI visibility tool? Partly. Some SEO suites record whether an AI Overview appears and which URLs it links. That covers one Google surface. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Copilot, and it usually does not check whether the overview states your facts correctly. If those engines or accuracy matter to your buyers, you still need a separate view.
If I rank well on Google, will ChatGPT mention me? Not necessarily. ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and rewrites prompts into its own queries. It can also answer from training data without searching. In OtterlyAI's experiment, a site ranking in Bing still got effectively zero ChatGPT citations. More detail is in [whether you need to rank on Google to show up in ChatGPT](/questions/need-google-ranking-for-chatgpt).
What should I measure first if my budget is small? Measure access first, because it is free and decisive. Check robots.txt per AI crawler, test whether your firewall returns 403 to those crawlers, and confirm key content loads without JavaScript. Then read what a few engines say about your brand for your top buyer questions. Pay for ongoing tracking only once you know there is a gap worth watching.
