How is an AI visibility audit different from an SEO audit?

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read

An AI visibility audit starts where an SEO audit does, with indexing, robots.txt and snippet controls. It then adds three checks most SEO audits skip: whether each AI crawler can reach your pages past the firewall, and whether your key content exists before JavaScript runs. It also checks what each AI engine says about your brand, including wrong facts. Neither audit can measure your position inside an AI answer, because no engine publishes that data.

The short answer, with the reasoning

An SEO audit asks whether Google can crawl, index and rank your pages. An AI visibility audit asks a wider question: can each AI platform reach your pages, read them, and describe your brand correctly?

The first question sits inside the second. Google states that a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that there are no additional technical requirements. So for Google's AI surfaces, a sound SEO audit does most of the access work.

Other engines are different. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity run their own crawlers, with their own robots.txt tokens, and most of them do not execute JavaScript. A Googlebot-focused audit can pass a site those crawlers cannot read.

It helps to think in four stages: what the model learned in training (parametric), whether crawlers can fetch your page (access), whether the page is pulled in for a query (retrieval), and what the model writes (generation). An audit can check access directly and observe generation. Retrieval and generation are decided by the engines. If the labels confuse you, see how AEO, GEO and AI SEO relate.

Where the two audits overlap

Both audits should check the same index-level controls, because these decide eligibility on Google and Bing alike.

  • Index eligibility. noindex tags, canonical conflicts and crawl errors keep a page out of Google Search, and therefore out of AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • Googlebot rules in robots.txt. There is no separate robots.txt token for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Googlebot's rules are the control.
  • Snippet controls. nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet keep content out of AI answers. Bing added data-nosnippet support in October 2025: marked content is still indexed but excluded from snippets and AI summaries.

The difference is emphasis. An SEO audit treats a stray data-nosnippet as a minor snippet issue. An AI visibility audit treats it as content removed from AI answers, often inherited from a template by someone hiding a cookie banner.

One control neither audit can crawl: Google Search Console's generative AI inclusion setting. Inclusion is the default, but a property can opt out, and child properties inherit the parent's setting. Checking it takes a screenshot from someone with Search Console access.

What an AI visibility audit adds

Three checks separate an AI visibility audit from an SEO audit.

Per-bot access

robots.txt rules are per bot, and each AI vendor runs several. OpenAI states that GPTBot governs training use, OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search, and "each setting is independent of the others." The most common real error is a blanket AI block that silently removes ChatGPT search eligibility.

Firewall and CDN reachability

A firewall or CDN can block a crawler that robots.txt allows. OpenAI says eligibility means allowing OAI-SearchBot and confirming your host or CDN allows its published IP addresses. From 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and existing free-tier customers, so access can change without anyone editing the site. The test is simple: request your pages as each crawler and record the status code. The AI Crawler Checker does this for one page, and the crawler access playbook covers a full site.

Rendering

Vercel found that ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. Prices or product names that appear only after hydration may be invisible to them. Googlebot renders, so an SEO audit rarely flags this.

What each engine says

The audit asks each platform buyer questions and records what it says: whether you are named, and which facts are wrong.

Check SEO audit AI visibility audit
Indexing, Googlebot rules Yes Yes
Snippet controls Partly Yes, as AI exclusion
Per-bot AI robots.txt Rarely Yes
Firewall test per crawler No Yes
Raw HTML vs rendered diff Sometimes Yes
Brand facts per engine No Yes

What neither audit can measure

Be clear about the limits, because some tools blur them.

  • Position inside an AI answer. As of October 2026, Google's Search Console report for generative AI shows impressions only, with no clicks or position. No engine publishes rank data, so there is nothing to validate an "AI rank" against.
  • The queries engines actually ran. ChatGPT search rewrites your prompt into its own queries. A prompt-based audit measures a proxy.
  • Whether an answer used live search. Retrieval is discretionary per query, so any single score averages answers given with and without live retrieval, including ours.

Also watch for audits that score things no engine measures. Google says E-E-A-T "isn't a specific ranking factor", so there is no score to improve. Schema is not a citation lever either: Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overviews citations fell 4.6% after pages added it. Existing markup does no harm, but an audit that sells it as a fix is overselling. Our guide to audit tool features that matter and the comparison of tracking tools and fixing tools go further.

What to do next

Run the audits in order, because each gate depends on the one before.

  1. Confirm Google and Bing index status separately, in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  2. Read robots.txt bot by bot: OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot, bingbot.
  3. Request a key page as each crawler and look for 403s or challenge pages.
  4. Compare raw HTML against the rendered page for prices, product names and definitions.
  5. Ask each engine your buyer questions and list every wrong fact.

The free checker on this site shows whether AI engines name you for three buyer questions. For a fuller walkthrough, start with the free GEO audit, then repeat the checks on a quarterly review.

More on this

Do I still need an SEO audit if I run an AI visibility audit? Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw only on pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible in Google Search, so index health is the foundation. A good AI visibility audit includes those checks, but a dedicated SEO audit goes deeper on crawl errors, canonicals and site structure. Think of the AI audit as the SEO audit's access checks plus the extra crawler, rendering and answer checks.

Can an AI visibility audit guarantee more AI citations? No. An audit can find and remove blocks you control: a robots.txt rule, a firewall 403, content hidden behind JavaScript, a stray nosnippet tag. Fixing those makes your pages eligible. Whether an engine retrieves and cites them for a given question is decided by the engine, and no published study shows a technique that reliably moves that across platforms.

Does allowing GPTBot help ChatGPT find my brand? Not for search. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and the two settings are independent. You can block GPTBot to keep content out of training while allowing OAI-SearchBot so your pages stay eligible for ChatGPT search answers. An audit should report the consequence for each bot separately.

How often should I run an AI visibility audit? Re-run the access checks after any change to your CDN, firewall, hosting or front-end framework, since each can block crawlers or move content behind JavaScript. Platform defaults change too, as Cloudflare's September 2026 crawler policy showed. For the answer checks, a quarterly cycle catches new wrong facts and model changes without turning the audit into daily noise.
