AI Visibility Tracking Tools vs Fixing Tools: What Each One Actually Does

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 6 min read

An AI visibility tracking tool sends AI engines a set of prompts it chose and reports how often your brand appears. A fixing tool checks what blocks you: crawler permissions, firewall reachability, JavaScript rendering, snippet suppression and contradictory facts on your own site. Tracking shows symptoms. The fixes are the only levers with mechanisms documented by the engines themselves, so ask any tool which of the two it actually does.

What a tracking tool actually measures

A tracking tool writes a list of prompts, sends them to engines such as ChatGPT or Perplexity, and counts how often your brand is named or cited. Run it weekly and you get a trend line.

That number is a sample, and the sample has three gaps.

  • The prompts are the tool's, not your buyers'. OpenAI says ChatGPT search typically rewrites a question into one or more targeted queries before it searches. The query that actually retrieves pages is one nobody outside the engine sees.
  • Retrieval switches on per answer. As of October 2026, ChatGPT searches at the model's discretion and Claude.ai search is a user toggle. An answer with no live search comes from training data with a fixed cutoff. A blended score mixes both kinds.
  • Citation is not the same as use. OpenAI's API often returns more retrieved sources than cited ones, so a citation count undercounts what the model read.

Tracking still has a job. It tells you something is wrong. It rarely tells you why. If you want one anyway, start with how to choose an AI visibility tracking tool, and read whether one dashboard can cover every engine before trusting a single score.

What a fixing tool checks

A fixing tool looks at your site and at the path between your site and each AI crawler. The checks that hold up are the ones where the engine operator documents the consequence.

  1. Per-bot robots.txt. OpenAI's crawler page says GPTBot governs training only, OAI-SearchBot controls whether you appear in ChatGPT search answers, and each setting is independent. A blanket AI block can silently remove you from ChatGPT search.
  2. Firewall and CDN reachability. OpenAI's help centre says eligibility needs OAI-SearchBot allowed and the host or CDN allowing traffic from its published IP addresses. A 403 from a bot rule undoes a correct robots.txt. From 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks training and agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and existing free-tier customers, so access can change without you editing anything.
  3. JavaScript rendering. Vercel found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. Content that appears only after hydration may be invisible to them. Googlebot renders, so this gap matters most outside Google.
  4. Suppression controls. noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet keep content out of AI answers. Bing documents that data-nosnippet content is excluded from AI summaries. Templates sometimes apply these by accident.
  5. Factual contradictions. If your pricing page and footer state different prices, the engine has conflicting sentences to quote. One specific fact, stated consistently in fetchable HTML, gives it a clean one.

These fixes are subtractive. They remove blocks. They don't guarantee a citation. The AI crawler access audit playbook walks through the first four.

Tracking vs fixing at a glance

Tracking tool Fixing tool
What it does Samples answers to chosen prompts Checks access, rendering, suppression and on-site facts
Output Mention rate, citation counts, trend A list of specific broken or missing things
Stage it sees The final answer Access, before any answer exists
Evidence behind the next step The observation only Mechanisms documented by OpenAI, Google and Bing
What you do next Guess at the cause Fix the named block
Blind spots Real queries, retrieval state, use vs citation What the model picks once your page is retrieved
Cadence Weekly or monthly After deploys, CDN changes, and quarterly

One column describes symptoms. The other describes causes you can change.

Red flags on either side

Both categories have their own oversell.

On a tracking tool

  • An "AI rank" or position inside Google's AI answers. Google's AI report shows impressions only, so no position data exists to check that number against.
  • One cross-platform score with no per-engine breakdown. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques.
  • Claims of up to 40% more visibility from GEO. That figure came from a lab engine with sources already loaded into its context.

On a fixing tool

  • Schema, FAQ schema or llms.txt sold as the fix. Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overview citations fell 4.6% after pages added schema, and Google says Search ignores llms.txt.
  • An E-E-A-T score or domain authority target. Google says E-E-A-T isn't a specific ranking factor, and no engine computes domain authority.
  • Rewriting copy in an "AI-friendly" style. A July 2026 survey of 45 GEO studies found no technique with a stable, cross-platform effect on discoverability.

If a tool's top recommendation is on this list, it isn't fixing access. See how to evaluate GEO tools without a ranking list.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Does it request my pages as each AI crawler, or only read robots.txt?
  2. Does it compare raw HTML with the rendered page?
  3. Does it report each engine separately and say whether search was on?
  4. Does it show which facts an engine got wrong, and where my own site contradicts itself?
  5. Does any recommendation promise a score, rank or citation? If yes, walk away.

A tool that answers yes to the first four is doing fixing work, whatever its marketing calls it. For full audit scope, see what a real AI SEO audit checks.

Which to use when

  • Fix first if you've never tested crawler access, recently changed CDN or firewall rules, moved to a JavaScript framework, or engines state wrong facts about you. This page explains why crawler access comes before tracking. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones your firewall turns away.
  • Track second, once access is clean, to watch each engine separately and catch regressions. Treat it as a smoke alarm, not a diagnosis.
  • Run both on a schedule. A quarterly AI visibility review pairs an access recheck with a fresh answer sample.
  • For a one-off snapshot, the free checker on this site shows whether engines name you for up to three buyer questions.

What stays outside your control either way: which retrieved page the model uses, and what it learned before its training cutoff.

More on this

Can a tracking tool tell me why I'm missing from AI answers? Not on its own. It observes the final answer to prompts it chose, so it sees the outcome, not the cause. Missing could mean a blocked crawler, a firewall 403, content that only appears after JavaScript runs, an accidental nosnippet, or simply that the engine chose another source. Only an access and rendering check can separate the causes you can fix from the ones you can't.

Is a fixing tool just an SEO audit? They overlap on index eligibility and noindex or snippet directives. A fixing tool adds checks a classic SEO audit usually skips: per-AI-bot robots.txt rules, live requests as each AI crawler through your CDN, a raw versus rendered HTML comparison for crawlers that don't run JavaScript, and consistency of the facts your site states about your brand.

Does fixing access guarantee I get cited? No. Access fixes make your pages eligible to be fetched and shown. Whether an engine retrieves a page for a given query, and whether it cites it, stays under the engine's control. What fixing does guarantee is that a block you could have removed isn't the reason you're absent. Any tool promising a citation, rank or score is promising something nobody controls.
