AI Visibility for HVAC Companies

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 8 min read

HVAC company AI visibility is whether ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and other assistants name your company, and state your facts correctly, when a homeowner asks who can fix or replace their system. You can't control what the models say. You can control whether AI crawlers can reach your site, whether your core facts sit in plain HTML, and whether the third-party sites engines cite describe you accurately.

What HVAC buyers ask AI assistants

HVAC demand is seasonal and often urgent. The first heat wave fills repair schedules, and the first cold snap does the same for furnaces. More of those buyers now type a full question into an assistant instead of scanning a list of links.

Here are realistic prompts for a hypothetical company in a mid-size city:

  1. "Who does same-day AC repair near me on a Sunday?"
  2. "My furnace is blowing cold air. Who can come out tonight in Columbus?"
  3. "Best HVAC companies in Columbus that service Carrier and Trane systems"
  4. "Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old AC or should I replace it?"
  5. "Which HVAC companies near me offer 0% financing on a new heat pump?"
  6. "How much does an annual HVAC maintenance plan cost in Columbus, and what's included?"
  7. "Do any local HVAC companies serve Dublin and Westerville?"

Two things matter here. First, engines don't send your prompt as typed. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites a query into one or more targeted queries before searching. Second, prompts 3, 5, 6 and 7 hinge on specific facts. If an engine can't find those facts on a page it can read, it guesses or names someone else.

The next move: write down the eight to ten questions your dispatchers hear most in peak season. Those are the prompts to test.

Which engines matter in the HVAC buying journey

Each assistant draws on a different index, so your visibility can differ sharply from one to the next. As of October 2026:

  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link, and there are no additional technical requirements. Your Google indexing health is the gate.
  • ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler page says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.
  • Perplexity. It indexes with PerplexityBot.
  • Microsoft Copilot. It grounds answers on the Bing index, which is separate from Google's.
  • Claude. Anthropic uses Claude-SearchBot for search quality, separate from its ClaudeBot training crawler.
  • Meta AI. Meta states that allowing Meta-WebIndexer in robots.txt helps it cite and link to your content.

Organic rank helps but isn't the whole story. Ahrefs found that 38% of AI Overview citations came from pages ranking in the top 10 (March 2026 method), so most citations came from further down.

The next move: check Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools separately. A healthy Google index says nothing about Bing, and the reverse is also true. The same split applies to plumbers and most other local trades.

The facts AI most often gets wrong for HVAC companies

AI platforms get specific facts wrong about specific businesses. For HVAC companies, the risky facts are the ones that change, or that live in places crawlers can't read:

  • Brands serviced. An assistant may say you don't service a brand you do, or claim you're an authorized dealer when you aren't.
  • Financing. Terms, rates and lender partners change. An old promo can outlive its end date in an AI answer.
  • Maintenance plans. Price, number of visits per year, and what's included (filter changes, priority scheduling, repair discounts).
  • Service areas. Suburbs you added or dropped, and whether you charge a trip fee outside a radius.
  • Hours and emergency service. Whether you really offer 24/7 calls, and whether nights and weekends cost extra.
  • Licensing and services. Whether you handle commercial work, ductwork, heat pumps or indoor air quality.

Some wrong answers come from what a model learned in training, and some come from what it retrieved during search. They need different fixes. Our guide to trained knowledge versus search errors in ChatGPT explains the difference.

The next move: write one canonical line for each fact above, then check that your site states it the same way on every page. Contradictions between your footer, your plans page and your financing page give engines conflicting text to quote.

Third-party sites worth checking

When engines cite other sites instead of yours, being named accurately on those sites is the route into the answer. The evidence shows a strong association here, not a guaranteed effect.

For HVAC companies, check these sources:

  • Review platforms where homeowners rate local contractors. Read your profile's business details, not just your star rating. Hours, service area and services listed there are often stale.
  • Map and local listings on Google and Bing. Service area, phone number and categories should match your site.
  • Manufacturer dealer locators. If you're listed as a dealer for an equipment brand, confirm your name, address and status are current.
  • Local directories and chamber pages that rank for "HVAC near me" searches in your city.
  • Lender or financing partner pages that list you as a participating contractor.

The next move: when you test a prompt and an engine cites a source, open that source and read what it says about you. If it's wrong, correct it at the source. To see which competitors engines name instead, try a free competitor AI visibility check.

Access checks: can AI crawlers reach your site

Access is where the strongest evidence sits. These checks remove blocks. They don't add rank.

robots.txt, per bot

Each bot has its own rule. OpenAI states that each setting is independent: you can allow OAI-SearchBot for search while disallowing GPTBot for training. A blanket AI block is the most common error, and it silently removes search eligibility. This is an example of a split policy:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

If you're unsure about training bots, read whether to block GPTBot. If your site already blocks everything, follow the steps for fixing a blanket AI block. There is no robots.txt token for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Googlebot rules are the control there.

Firewall and CDN

A firewall or CDN can block a crawler that robots.txt allows. OpenAI's help center says eligibility needs both: allow OAI-SearchBot and confirm your host or CDN allows traffic from its published IP addresses. From 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and free-tier customers, while Search stays allowed. Check your settings even if you changed nothing.

Snippet and index controls

noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet keep content out of AI answers. Templates sometimes apply them by accident. Google Search Console also has a generative AI control that is on by default but can be inherited from a parent property.

The next move: request your homepage and service pages as each AI crawler and record the status code. The AI Crawler Checker shows which crawlers your firewall turns away.

Put your core facts in plain HTML

HVAC sites lean on JavaScript: financing calculators, instant quote forms, zip code service area checkers, booking widgets and maintenance plan comparison tabs. Those tools help human visitors. They can hide facts from AI crawlers.

Vercel's crawler study found that ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them, so they can't read client-side rendered content. Googlebot renders JavaScript, so this gap mostly affects non-Google engines.

Say you run a hypothetical HVAC company whose financing terms appear only after a visitor moves a slider. An AI crawler sees an empty box. Ask "who offers financing on a new AC near me" and the engine has no sentence from you to quote.

The fix is simple:

  • Keep the calculator, but state the terms in a plain sentence above it: lender, minimum purchase, promo length.
  • List every city and zip you serve as text, not only inside a map or lookup tool.
  • State maintenance plan price and inclusions in a plain table or list.
  • Name the equipment brands you service in body text.

Stating a specific fact on a fetchable page gives the engine a sentence it can quote. That's the only positive experimental signal for on-page content. One caution: don't mass-produce near-identical city pages. Google's spam policies treat many pages made to manipulate rankings without adding value as scaled content abuse.

A 30-day plan

Week 1: baseline. Test your seven to ten peak-season prompts in ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity and Copilot, logged out. Record who's named, which sources are cited, and every wrong fact. The free checker on this site shows whether ChatGPT names you for three buyer questions.

Week 2: access. Review robots.txt per bot. Request key pages as each AI crawler and confirm a 200 response. Check your CDN bot settings, your snippet tags, and both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Week 3: facts. Write the canonical line for brands serviced, financing, maintenance plans, service areas, hours and emergency service. Put each in plain HTML on the relevant page. Fix contradictions across the site.

Week 4: third parties and recheck. Correct stale details on review platforms, map listings, dealer locators and lender pages. Rerun the Week 1 prompts and compare. Retrieval varies by query, so treat one run as a snapshot, not a verdict.

After day 30, recheck before each season. If you want ongoing monitoring for false claims, see tools that alert you when AI says something false. If you're weighing outside help, read whether a small business needs an AI search service.

More on this

Does schema markup help HVAC companies show up in AI answers? Not as a lever. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search. Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overview citations fell 4.6% after pages added schema, though every page in that study was already heavily cited. Existing markup does no harm, so there's no reason to remove it. Spend the time on crawler access and plain-HTML facts instead.

Why does ChatGPT name a competitor but not my HVAC company? Start with the checks, not assumptions. Confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, your firewall returns a 200 to it, and your service area and services appear in HTML before JavaScript runs. Then look at the sources ChatGPT cites for that prompt. If they're review or directory sites that omit you, getting listed accurately there is the route in.

Should I block AI crawlers during peak season to save server load? Blocking search crawlers removes you from those engines' answers exactly when buyers are asking. If load is a concern, rate-limit rather than block, and keep retrieval bots such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot allowed. Training bots like GPTBot are a separate decision with no documented effect on search visibility.

How often should an HVAC company recheck its AI visibility? Recheck before each peak season and after any change to financing, maintenance plans, service areas or your website platform. A site migration or new CDN setting can block crawlers without warning. Answers also vary by query and by whether the engine searched live, so compare several runs rather than reading too much into one.

Do AI assistants read my financing calculator? Most non-Google AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript, according to Vercel's crawler study, so a calculator that renders terms client-side is likely invisible to them. Googlebot does render JavaScript. The safe approach is to keep the calculator and add a plain sentence stating the lender, promo length and minimum purchase in the page HTML.
