Can I improve AI visibility without changing my website?

Partly. Marketing can earn mentions on pages AI engines already cite, correct wrong facts on third-party listings, set up Bing Webmaster Tools, and check account settings in Search Console and your CDN. None of that is guaranteed to change an answer. The fixes with the strongest evidence, such as server-side rendering and crawler access, live on your site and usually need a developer.
The short answer, and why the split matters
You can do useful work without touching your site, but you can't do all of it. AI answers pass through four stages: what the model already knows (parametric), whether crawlers can reach your pages (access), whether a page gets pulled in for a given question (retrieval), and what the model writes (generation).
Off-site work mostly affects retrieval. When an engine answers a question by citing a review roundup or a directory, your name on that page is how you get into the answer. Our comparison of your own site and third-party mentions covers when each one carries the answer.
Access is different. If a crawler can't read your pricing because it only appears after JavaScript runs, no amount of outreach fixes that. The page itself has to change.
The parametric stage is out of everyone's hands this quarter. A model answering without search uses training data frozen at a cutoff. OpenAI lists a February 16, 2026 cutoff for its GPT-5.6 models. Read more on why search-on and search-off answers differ.
What marketing can do without a developer
These jobs need logins, email and time, not a deploy.
Earn mentions on pages engines already cite
Start by finding the third-party pages AI engines cite for your buyer questions. Then work on getting listed on those cited pages. A plain unlinked mention still counts, because the engine reads the text, not the link. Treat this as an association with appearing, not a lever with a known effect size.
Correct wrong facts on listings
AI platforms get specific facts wrong about specific brands: old prices, retired product names, the wrong headquarters. Often the wrong fact sits on a directory or review profile. Our playbook on asking third-party sites to fix wrong facts covers the request itself.
Set up Bing Webmaster Tools
Microsoft documents the Bing index as the backing store for Copilot and its grounding service. The AI Performance report shows citations and grounding queries, the phrases the AI actually searched. As of August 2026 that data had no API, so someone has to export it by hand.
Check account-level switches
- Search Console: inclusion in AI Overviews and AI Mode is on by default, but a property can be opted out, and child properties inherit the parent's setting.
- Cloudflare or your CDN: from September 15, 2026, Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and existing free-tier customers. Search stays allowed. Whoever holds the account should check the setting.
Jobs that still need a developer
The access fixes have the strongest evidence in the field, and they all live in code or server config.
| Job | Why it matters | Who does it |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side render key facts | Vercel found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them | Developer |
| Per-bot robots.txt rules | OpenAI says its bot settings are independent: GPTBot covers training, OAI-SearchBot covers ChatGPT search | Developer or site admin |
| Firewall allows AI crawlers | A firewall can return 403 to a crawler that robots.txt allows | Developer or ops |
| Remove stray noindex, nosnippet or data-nosnippet | These keep content out of AI answers, often inherited from a template | Developer |
A one-line robots.txt edit still needs someone who can deploy. Write it as a clear ticket: our guide to developer tickets for AI access fixes has templates. To see which crawlers your firewall turns away today, the AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each one.
What the evidence does and doesn't support
A July 2026 critical survey of 45 GEO studies (arXiv 2607.14035) found no technique with a stable, cross-platform causal effect on discoverability. That covers on-site tricks and off-site ones alike.
Otterly's 2026 experiment shows why index status engine by engine matters. Google deindexed both test sites, and its AI surfaces almost stopped citing them. Bing kept them, and Microsoft Copilot produced 2,718 of the 3,934 citations Otterly tracked for one site. ChatGPT cited them effectively zero times, even while they ranked in Bing. One pair of sites can't prove much, but it shows that being in an index is necessary, not sufficient.
Be wary of shortcuts sold as off-site wins. Mass-produced content is one: our answer on AI content automation tools explains the risk. Planting hidden instructions on third-party pages is another. That is prompt injection, it's illegitimate, and it can expose your brand.
What to do next
- Run the free checker on this site to see whether engines name you for three buyer questions. It's a snapshot, not tracking.
- List the third-party pages cited in those answers and check what they say about you.
- Fix wrong facts on listings you control, then request corrections on the rest.
- Set up Bing Webmaster Tools and screenshot the Search Console generative AI control.
- Check your CDN's AI crawler settings.
- File developer tickets for rendering, robots.txt and firewall checks. Off-site work can't reach pages crawlers can't read.
Will getting listed on review sites make AI recommend us? No one can promise that. When engines cite other sites for a question, being named on those pages is associated with appearing in the answer, but no study gives an effect size. Engines also rewrite questions into their own search queries, so the page that gets retrieved can change from one answer to the next. Treat listings as a way to be eligible, not a guarantee.
Does allowing GPTBot help ChatGPT find us? No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI states each setting is independent. Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, and allowing it doesn't add you. Either change is a robots.txt edit, which is a site change that someone with deploy access has to make.
Does being in Bing get us into ChatGPT? Microsoft documents Bing as the index behind Copilot. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, but the end-to-end effect has never been measured. In Otterly's 2026 test, sites that ranked in Bing still got effectively zero ChatGPT citations. Bing Webmaster Tools is worth setting up for Copilot and for its grounding query data, not as a ChatGPT shortcut.
How fast do off-site fixes show up in AI answers? There's no published timeline. Answers that use live search can reflect a corrected listing once the engine fetches the updated page. Answers given without search draw on training data frozen at a cutoff, so they can repeat an old fact until a newer model ships. Check answers with search on and off separately before judging whether a fix worked.
