Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitors but never mention my brand?

ChatGPT usually leaves a brand out for one of four reasons. Its search crawler can't reach your site. You launched after the model's knowledge cutoff. You aren't named on the third-party pages it cites. Or your competitors are simply bigger and more often mentioned. Check them in that order. The first is binary and fixable. The last is a strong association that no one can directly change.
The short answer: four causes, checked in order
ChatGPT works in two modes. Sometimes it searches the web before answering. Sometimes it answers from what the model learned in training, which stops at a fixed cutoff date. OpenAI's help page says ChatGPT search typically rewrites your question into one or more targeted queries, and the model decides when to search.
That gives four separate causes for a missing brand:
- Blocked access. In search mode, ChatGPT can't use a page its crawler couldn't fetch.
- A knowledge cutoff before your launch. Without search, the model only knows what existed before its cutoff.
- Absence from cited third-party pages. If ChatGPT pulls recommendations from roundups and reviews, it names the brands those pages name.
- Brand prominence. Larger, more-discussed brands get mentioned far more often.
Check them in that order. Access is binary, checkable in minutes and fully in your control. Prominence is real but not something any tactic moves directly.
Check access first: can ChatGPT's search crawler reach you
OpenAI runs separate crawlers. GPTBot collects training data. OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search. OpenAI's crawler page says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" and that each setting is independent of the others. A blanket AI block in robots.txt is the most common way brands remove themselves from ChatGPT search without meaning to.
A minimal permission looks like this:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
robots.txt is only half the gate. OpenAI's help centre also tells site owners to confirm their host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published search bot IP addresses. A firewall can return a 403 to a crawler that robots.txt allows, and nothing in your dashboards will say so. As of September 15, 2026, Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains and free-tier accounts, while Search stays allowed by default. Check that your zone settings match what you intend.
Then check rendering. Vercel's crawler study found ChatGPT's crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. If your product names and prices only appear after JavaScript runs, the crawler sees an empty page.
If robots.txt looks right and you still never appear, work through what else can block ChatGPT. If your logs show GPTBot but not OAI-SearchBot, that tells you something too. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones your firewall turns away.
Check the date: did you launch after the cutoff
When ChatGPT answers without searching, it relies only on training data. OpenAI's model documentation, as verified in August 2026, lists a February 16, 2026 knowledge cutoff for the GPT-5.6 family and August 31, 2025 for the Instant path (chat-latest). "ChatGPT" is not one knowledge state. Which model answers changes the cutoff by months.
If your brand launched, renamed or entered a category after the relevant cutoff, a no-search answer cannot mention you. Nothing you publish this quarter changes that. Allowing GPTBot doesn't fix it either. Training inclusion only lands in a future model, and nobody has measured whether it improves brand recall.
What this means: your realistic route today is search mode. That sends you back to access, and to the pages search mode cites.
Check the pages ChatGPT cites instead of yours
Run your buyer questions and look at what ChatGPT cites when it does search. In many categories the sources are comparison lists, review roundups and forum threads, not vendor sites. When engines cite other sites instead of yours, being named on those sites is the route into the answer. That is an association in the evidence, not a promised effect.
The practical work:
- List the third-party pages cited for prompts where competitors appear and you don't. The competitor prompt gap playbook sets out a repeatable method.
- Find out which of those pages accept submissions, updates or corrections. Our guide to third-party mentions and AI answers covers this, and so does the question of whether affiliate review sites decide AI recommendations.
- On your own site, state specific facts (your price, your category in one line, who you serve) in HTML that loads without JavaScript. That gives the engine a sentence it can quote. It's the only on-page practice with a positive experimental signal, and it guarantees nothing.
Accept what brand size explains
Citation in AI answers is heavily concentrated. A 2025 study of AI search citations (arXiv 2507.05301, data from March to May 2025) found the top 20 news sources accounted for 67.3% of all citations for OpenAI models. Brand prominence is the strongest association in the research. It's also the main uncontrolled factor in most studies claiming a tactic works.
It isn't a lever. There's no E-E-A-T score to raise, and no engine computes domain authority. A July 2026 survey of 45 GEO studies (arXiv 2607.14035) found no technique with a stable, cross-platform causal effect on discoverability.
So compare yourself fairly. If you benchmark against the category leader, you're measuring size. Benchmark against like-sized competitors, fix every access problem you find, and track the gap over time.
Will allowing GPTBot get my brand into ChatGPT answers? No. GPTBot governs training use only, and OpenAI doesn't claim it helps search visibility. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, a separate setting. Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search either. If you want to appear in search answers, allow OAI-SearchBot and make sure your firewall or CDN lets it through.
Will adding schema markup or an llms.txt file help? The evidence doesn't support either as a route into AI answers. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema and found no major uplift in AI citations on any platform. Google says Search ignores llms.txt, and no other engine documents reading it. Existing markup does no harm. It just isn't the reason competitors appear and you don't.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time I ask? ChatGPT decides per question whether to search, rewrites queries before searching, and can use saved memory when signed in. Each of those changes the answer. Test signed out with memory off, and repeat each question. The free checker on this site shows whether ChatGPT names you for three buyer questions, and our [free ChatGPT brand mention check](/free/free-chatgpt-brand-mention-check) explains the method.
How quickly will ChatGPT mention me after I fix access? Nobody can promise a timeline or an outcome. Fixing access makes your pages eligible for search answers. It doesn't decide whether ChatGPT retrieves or cites them for a given question. OpenAI says only that it ranks results using multiple factors and that placement is not guaranteed. Recheck the same prompts over the following weeks and compare.
