Why does AI cite my site but send almost no traffic?

Short answer
AI engines can cite your site without sending visits because a citation is a link shown inside an answer, not a click. A reader who gets the answer often has no reason to leave. Measurement also hides some real visits: Google AI Overviews pass no referral, Search Console's AI report shows impressions only, and ChatGPT tags only some of its links. Treat every AI referral number in your analytics as a lower bound.
Key takeaways
- A citation is a link shown inside an answer, and most of the value it delivers can happen without a click.
- Google AI Overviews emit no referral, so visits from them cannot be separated cleanly in analytics.
- Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or position, as of October 2026.
- ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, but free tier and mobile app clicks often arrive untagged.
- AI referral totals are a floor, and share-of-referral comparisons between engines mostly measure which engines stamp their links.
The short answer: a citation and a visit are different events
An AI engine cites you when it shows your URL as a source for its answer. A visit happens only if the reader then clicks that link. Those are two separate events, and the second one is optional. This is the same pattern as zero-click search, pushed further: the answer itself does the job your page used to do.
Two things then shrink the number you see in analytics:
- Fewer clicks happen. If the answer already contains your price or your definition, the reader may never need your page.
- Fewer clicks get attributed. Some engines send visits that arrive with no referrer, or with a referrer your analytics does not recognise. Those visits land in direct or unassigned traffic.
So a low AI referral line is partly real and partly a measurement gap. You can't fully separate the two, but you can see where each gap sits.
One more wrinkle: a citation is not proof the engine used your page. OpenAI says the list of sources ChatGPT consulted is often longer than the list it cites, and mechanistic research on retrieval-augmented models (arXiv:2606.28358) shows citation output can be changed without changing the sources. Our guide to cited vs retrieved sources covers this in detail.
Where the referral signal disappears
Each platform leaks attribution in a different place. As of October 2026:
| Surface | What reaches your analytics | What you can see first-party |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | No referral of their own | Search Console impressions only |
| ChatGPT | utm_source=chatgpt.com on many links |
Nothing from OpenAI |
| Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries | Varies | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report |
| Perplexity, Claude | Varies by app and link type | No publisher report |
The Google row matters most. AI Overviews emit no referral at all, so clicks from them blend into ordinary Google organic traffic. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions, broken down by pages, countries, dates and devices. It has no clicks, no CTR and no position. We cover the detail in whether Search Console shows AI Overview clicks.
ChatGPT is the most trackable engine because it stamps its links. That stamping is incomplete, though: clicks from the free tier and the mobile app frequently arrive untagged.
What you can measure today
You can't see the full picture, but you can see more than most teams check.
- Search Console generative AI report. Impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Global rollout completed around 11 August 2026. A confirmed Google bug depressed impressions in this report from roughly 12 to 13 August 2026, so treat trends across that window with caution.
- Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report. Citations across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners, plus grounding queries: the phrases the AI actually ran when it retrieved your content. Microsoft calls its Citation Share metric observational, not a scoreboard. There is no API for this report as of October 2026.
- Analytics referrers. GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel in May 2026. Check it alongside a custom segment for known AI referrer domains and the
chatgpt.comUTM. - Server and CDN logs. These show which AI crawlers fetch which pages. Fetches are not visits, but they tell you which pages engines are pulling.
First-party counts can be far larger than sampled ones. In Otterly's 2026 experiment, Microsoft's AI Performance report credited one test site with 42,817 citations, while Otterly's prompt-based tracker logged 3,934. The time windows may not match, but any prompt sample is a sample. For the setup steps, see measuring AI referral traffic in analytics.
Why every AI referral number is a lower bound
Your AI referral total counts only the visits that arrived labelled. Every unlabelled AI visit is missing from it, and none are added by mistake. That makes the figure a floor, not an estimate.
This has a practical consequence for comparisons. When a report says one engine sends most AI traffic, it usually means most trackable AI referrals. An engine that tags its links will look bigger than one that doesn't, even if real clicks are similar. We unpack that claim in whether ChatGPT really sends most AI referral traffic.
Citations themselves are not comparable across engines either. Anthropic's web search tool cites short text spans, while Perplexity cites whole sources by index number. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques, and AI Overviews often do not trigger at all. Adding these into one number mixes different units.
What to do next
Start by deciding what you want AI answers to do for you, then measure the parts you can.
- Record impressions and citations as their own metrics. Don't judge AI visibility by referral visits alone. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools give you first-party numbers.
- Check the answer, not just the link. If engines quote your price or your positioning correctly, the citation is doing work even without a click. If they get facts wrong, that is worth fixing first. Stating specific facts plainly on a fetchable page gives an engine a sentence it can quote.
- Watch for blended traffic. Compare Google organic clicks with AI Overview impressions on the same pages over time. Our guide to AI Overviews and your traffic walks through it.
- Confirm access. If a crawler visits but you are never cited, see why AI crawlers visit but never cite.
Nobody controls whether a reader clicks. You control whether engines can reach your pages and whether your facts are stated clearly. To see whether ChatGPT names you at all, the free checker on this site runs up to three buyer questions as a snapshot.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews count as clicks in Search Console?
Not separately. As of October 2026, Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions only for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no clicks, CTR or position. Any clicks from an AI Overview appear mixed into your normal Google organic traffic, because AI Overviews emit no referral of their own. You can see that your page was shown, but not how many people clicked it from the overview.
Why does ChatGPT traffic show up as direct in my analytics?
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to many of the links it sends, which makes those visits easy to label. That tagging is incomplete. Clicks from the free tier and the mobile app frequently arrive untagged, and visits with no referrer and no UTM usually land in direct or unassigned traffic. Your ChatGPT number in analytics is therefore a minimum, not the full count.
Is a citation worth anything if nobody clicks?
It can be. A citation means your page sat behind an answer a reader saw, and the answer may repeat your price, product name or definition. That shapes what the reader believes about you even without a visit. The risk runs the other way too: an engine can cite you and still state a wrong fact, so check what the answer says, not only that the link appears.
Can I track AI citations through an API?
Partly. Google's generative AI report in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report are both available in the web interface only, with no API as of October 2026. Developer APIs from OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity return the sources they cite for queries you run yourself, but those are your test prompts, not real user traffic.
Should I block AI engines if they send no traffic?
Think about what blocking removes. Blocking a search crawler such as OAI-SearchBot takes you out of that engine's answers, which ends the citations along with the small traffic. Blocking a training crawler such as GPTBot affects training use only, not ChatGPT search. Each setting is independent, so decide per bot based on whether being named in answers matters to you.
