Free AI Search Optimization: Checks You Can Run Now

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 8 min read

The most useful free AI SEO work is a set of access checks you run yourself. View your page source to confirm key facts appear before JavaScript runs. Read robots.txt one bot at a time. Look for noindex and nosnippet directives. Then open Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. These checks find what stops AI engines from reading you. No free tool can make an engine cite you.

What free AI SEO checks can and cannot do

An AI answer about your brand passes through four stages, and free checks only reach one of them.

  • Parametric: what the model learned before its knowledge cutoff. Nothing you publish this quarter changes it.
  • Access: whether a crawler may fetch and store your page. You and your CDN control this.
  • Retrieval: whether your page enters the model's context for a given question. The engine decides.
  • Generation: which retrieved pages get used and cited. The model decides.

Every check on this page sits in the access stage. That is deliberate. A July 2026 critical survey of 45 GEO studies (arXiv 2607.14035) found that content already retrieved can change how it gets cited, but no reviewed technique showed a stable, cross-platform causal effect on whether a page gets discovered at all.

So the free AI tools that rewrite your copy are working on the last stage, assuming the earlier ones already succeeded. The access checks below find the cases where they did not. For a map of what each kind of tool actually tests, see what free GEO tools check.

What you control and what you don't

Be clear about the split before you spend an afternoon on this.

In your control

  • Whether your key facts are in the HTML before JavaScript runs.
  • Which bots your robots.txt allows.
  • Whether your firewall or CDN lets those bots through.
  • Whether noindex, nosnippet or data-nosnippet hides content you want shown.
  • Whether your pages say specific facts (a price, a number, a one-line definition) plainly enough to quote.

Not in your control

  • Whether an engine searches the web for a given question at all. As of October 2026, ChatGPT search triggers at the model's discretion, and Google AI Overviews often do not appear.
  • The queries the engine actually runs. OpenAI says ChatGPT search rewrites your prompt into one or more targeted queries.
  • Which retrieved page the model chooses to cite.

The access items are binary. Fixing them makes you eligible. It does not promise a citation, and anyone who promises one is selling past the evidence.

Check 1: view source for content that needs JavaScript

This is the strongest check in the set, and it costs nothing.

  1. Open a page that matters: pricing, a product page, your homepage.
  2. Press Ctrl+U (Cmd+Option+U on a Mac) to see the raw HTML the server sent.
  3. Search that source for your price, product names and the one sentence that describes what you do.
  4. Compare with what you see in the normal browser view.

If a fact shows on screen but not in the source, JavaScript put it there. Vercel's crawler study found that ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but don't execute them. Independent re-testing in June 2026 found the same for OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Meta-ExternalAgent and others. Googlebot does render, so Google may see your page while ChatGPT search sees an empty shell.

Check tabs, accordions and "load more" buttons too. Content fetched on click has the same problem.

What to do: ask your developer to server-render or prerender the facts that matter. If you want to run this across many URLs, the scripts for AI SEO checks page shows how to diff raw and rendered text.

Check 2: read robots.txt one bot at a time

Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and read it per user-agent. Each AI company runs several bots, and they do different jobs. OpenAI states that "each setting is independent of the others".

Bot What it controls If you block it
OAI-SearchBot ChatGPT search Not shown in ChatGPT search answers
GPTBot OpenAI model training Training use stops; search is unaffected
ChatGPT-User Fetches a user asks for OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply
Claude-SearchBot Claude search quality Claude search loses access
ClaudeBot Anthropic training Training use stops
PerplexityBot Perplexity's search index Out of Perplexity's index
Perplexity-User User-triggered fetches Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt
Googlebot All Google surfaces, including AI Overviews and AI Mode Out of Google, AI features included
Google-Extended Gemini Apps training and grounding No effect on Google Search
Meta-WebIndexer Meta AI search Meta says allowing it helps it cite you

The most common mistake is a blanket block on every AI bot, which silently removes ChatGPT search eligibility. A setup that opts out of training but stays in ChatGPT search looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

There is no robots.txt token that blocks only AI Overviews. Googlebot is the control for all of Google Search.

Check 3: snippet directives and the firewall

Snippet directives

In the page source, search for noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet. Google documents that a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Bing says content marked data-nosnippet is still indexed but excluded from snippets and AI summaries. These tags often arrive in a template from someone who only wanted to hide a cookie banner. If one covers content you want quoted, remove it.

The firewall

robots.txt is half the gate. OpenAI's help page says eligibility for ChatGPT search means allowing OAI-SearchBot and confirming your host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. A site can say "allow" in robots.txt while its firewall returns 403, and no dashboard will warn you.

Check your CDN's bot settings. Since 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks its Training and Agent crawler categories by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains, new sites on existing accounts and existing free-tier customers, while Search stays allowed. You can lose access without editing anything. The free AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones your firewall turns away.

Check 4: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools

Both are free, and each shows data nothing else can.

Google Search Console

  • Use URL Inspection on key pages to confirm they are indexed.
  • Open the generative AI performance report. As of October 2026 it shows impressions only for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no clicks, CTR or position.
  • Find the generative AI inclusion control if your property has it. Inclusion is the default, but a child property inherits its parent's setting, so a site can be excluded without anyone choosing it.
  • Be careful with trends from mid-August 2026. A Google-side bug depressed impressions in these reports from around 12 to 13 August.

Bing Webmaster Tools

  • Confirm your pages are in Bing's index. Bing backs Microsoft Copilot.
  • Open the AI Performance report. It shows citations across Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partners, plus grounding queries: the phrases the AI actually used when it retrieved your content. Microsoft says the grounding query data is a sample.
  • There is no API for this report, so export it by hand.

Google and Bing keep separate indexes. Check both, every time.

A practical order of work

Run the checks in the order a crawler meets them. A later fix is wasted if an earlier gate is shut.

  1. robots.txt: confirm OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Meta-WebIndexer, Googlebot and Bingbot are allowed, unless you chose otherwise.
  2. Firewall and CDN: confirm those bots get a 200, not a 403 or a challenge page.
  3. View source: confirm prices, product names and your core description are in the raw HTML.
  4. Directives: remove any noindex or snippet block covering content you want shown.
  5. Search Console: check index status and the generative AI inclusion setting.
  6. Bing Webmaster Tools: check index status and read the grounding queries.
  7. Answers: only now look at what AI engines actually say. The free checker on this site shows whether engines name you for up to three buyer questions.

A small team can do steps 1 to 6 in an afternoon. The one-afternoon AI visibility check breaks it into time blocks. Access settings change when vendors change defaults, so plan a regular re-check cadence rather than a single pass.

Common mistakes with free AI SEO tools

  • Allowing GPTBot to get into ChatGPT. GPTBot governs training only. Search uses OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search either.
  • Adding FAQ schema for AI answers. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search. Ahrefs' matched-control test found AI Overview citations fell 4.6% on pages after schema was added, and Google deprecated FAQ rich results in May 2026. Existing markup does no harm, so there is no need to remove it. It just isn't a lever.
  • Publishing an llms.txt. Google says Search ignores it, and no other engine documents reading it.
  • Running pages through an AI rewriter. Google says you don't need to write in a specific way for generative AI search. C-SEO Bench found most conversational SEO methods ineffective and often harmful. Mass-producing AI pages risks Google's scaled content abuse policy; see whether AI optimization can hurt Google rankings.
  • Trusting an "AI rank". Google exposes impressions only. No position data exists to check such a number against.
  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI crawlers. Prompt injection and cloaking exist, and research shows some agents can be swayed by them. They are manipulation, they break search policies, and they put your brand at risk. Don't use them.

More on this

Are free AI SEO checks enough for a small business? For the access stage, usually yes. View source, robots.txt, snippet directives, a firewall test and the two webmaster consoles cover the blocks with the strongest evidence behind them. What free checks can't give you is ongoing measurement of what engines say about you across many questions. Start free, fix what is broken, and decide on paid tracking only once you know what you need to watch.

Does allowing GPTBot help me appear in ChatGPT answers? No. OpenAI documents GPTBot as the crawler for model training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, and OpenAI says each setting is independent. You can block GPTBot to opt out of training and still allow OAI-SearchBot to stay eligible for ChatGPT search. The reverse also holds: allowing GPTBot does nothing for search if OAI-SearchBot is blocked.

Can a free tool show my ranking in Google AI Overviews? No tool can show a verified position. As of October 2026, Google's own generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no clicks, CTR or position. Google also says third-party tools don't have access to its internal ranking data. Treat any AI rank number as the tool's own estimate, not a measurement.

Will fixing these access problems get my brand cited? It makes you eligible, which is the precondition. It does not guarantee anything. Once a crawler can reach and read your page, the engine still decides whether to search, which pages to retrieve and which to cite. What you can add is clear, specific facts on fetchable pages, which gives an engine a sentence it can quote if it retrieves you.

Why does my page show up in Google but not in ChatGPT? The usual suspects are JavaScript and access. Googlebot renders JavaScript, while ChatGPT's crawlers, per Vercel's study, fetch scripts without running them. Check whether your key content is in the raw source. Then confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and that your firewall doesn't return a 403 to OpenAI's published IP ranges. Either gap can explain the difference.
