AI Search Impact on SEO: How AI Features Affect Organic Results

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 7 min read

AI search sits on top of organic results rather than replacing them. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw supporting links from the same index as regular search, so a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be cited. The bigger change is measurement. AI Overviews send no referral, Search Console reports AI impressions only, and chat engines tag traffic inconsistently. Track eligibility, citations and accuracy per engine instead of one AI traffic number.

Why AI referral numbers undercount

Most teams want one number: how much traffic AI sends. The data to build that number does not exist yet. Four gaps explain why.

  • AI Overviews send no referral. Analytics cannot separate a visit from an AI Overview link as its own source.
  • Search Console reports impressions only. As of October 2026, the generative AI report covers AI Overviews and AI Mode with pages, countries, dates and devices. It has no clicks, no CTR and no position. See whether Search Console shows AI Overview clicks.
  • Chat engines tag inconsistently. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, but free-tier and mobile-app clicks frequently arrive untagged. Many other engines do not stamp outbound links at all.
  • Mentions without links produce no visit. An answer can name your brand, describe your pricing and send nobody.

So a tagged "AI traffic" figure is a floor on AI-driven visits, not an estimate of them. It measures tagging behavior as much as usage. Use it as one signal among several, as covered in measuring AI Overviews' traffic impact.

What you control and what you do not

The levers with solid evidence are access levers. They work by removing blocks, not by adding markup or phrasing.

Area In your control Not in your control
Google AI features Indexing, noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet, the Search Console AI inclusion control Whether an AI Overview triggers, which links it picks
ChatGPT search Allowing OAI-SearchBot, firewall access to OpenAI's search IPs Whether the model searches, how it rewrites the query
Other chat engines Per-bot robots.txt for PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot, server-rendered content Which retrieved pages get cited
Model knowledge Facts stated clearly on fetchable pages What the model learned before its training cutoff

A few specifics matter. There is no robots.txt token that blocks AI Overviews or AI Mode; Googlebot rules are the control. GPTBot governs training only, and OpenAI states each bot setting "is independent of the others". Google's Search Console inclusion control is opt-out: inclusion is the default, it is still rolling out to a subset of owners, and child properties inherit from the parent. The free Search Console AI control check walks through it.

What to track instead of one AI traffic number

Replace the single number with a short panel, one row per engine.

  1. Eligibility. Google index status in Search Console and Bing index status in Bing Webmaster Tools, checked separately. One being healthy tells you nothing about the other.
  2. Access. Per-bot robots.txt rules and whether each crawler actually gets a 200 response from your server.
  3. Google AI impressions. The Search Console generative AI report, by page. Google confirmed a bug that depressed impressions in these reports from around 12 August 2026, so treat that window with care.
  4. Bing citations and grounding queries. Bing's AI Performance report shows citations and the grounding queries the AI actually used. Microsoft says the grounding query data is a sample and calls Citation Share an observational metric, not a scoreboard. As of October 2026 there is no API, so export it by hand.
  5. Answer accuracy. For a fixed set of buyer questions, record whether each engine names you and whether it states your price, product and facts correctly. Note whether the answer showed citations, since an answer without them may come from training data alone.
  6. Tagged referrals. Keep them, labelled as a floor.

For a quick snapshot of item 5, the free checker on this site shows whether AI engines name you for up to three buyer questions. It is a point-in-time check, not continuous tracking.

A practical order of work

Work from the gates that block you completely toward the signals that only inform you.

  1. Confirm Google eligibility. Check key pages for noindex, nosnippet, max-snippet:0 and data-nosnippet. These are often inherited from a template by someone hiding a cookie banner.
  2. Check the Search Console inclusion control, including any child property inheriting from a parent. Read whether opting out affects rankings before changing it.
  3. Read robots.txt per bot. The common error is a blanket AI block that removes ChatGPT search eligibility along with training.
  4. Test network access. A CDN or firewall can return 403 to a crawler that robots.txt allows. From 15 September 2026, Cloudflare blocks Training and Agent crawlers by default on ad-displaying pages for new domains, new sites on existing accounts and existing free-tier customers, while Search stays allowed. The AI Crawler Checker requests a page as each AI crawler and shows which ones get turned away.
  5. Server-render the facts that matter. Vercel's crawler study found ChatGPT and Claude crawlers fetch JavaScript files but do not execute them. Googlebot renders, so this matters most for non-Google engines.
  6. State specific facts plainly and consistently. A price or one-line definition on a fetchable page gives an engine a sentence it can quote. Fix places where your own pages contradict each other.
  7. Set a measurement baseline using the panel above, then recheck monthly.

Common mistakes

  • Reading tagged referrals as total AI impact. They miss AI Overviews entirely and miss untagged chat clicks.
  • Reporting an AI rank or position. Google exposes impressions only for its AI surfaces, so there is no position data to check such a number against.
  • Confusing the OpenAI bots. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, and allowing it does not get you cited there. OAI-SearchBot controls search.
  • Adding schema or llms.txt to get cited. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and Ahrefs' matched test found AI Overview citations fell 4.6% after pages added schema. Google Search ignores llms.txt. Existing markup does no harm; it just is not a lever for AI answers.
  • Blending engines into one score. In Otterly's experiment, Microsoft Copilot produced 2,718 of one site's 3,934 tracked citations while ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces barely cited it. A blended score would have hidden that.
  • Mass-publishing thin pages. Google removed both of Otterly's 1,000-post test sites with no manual action notice. For the broader picture, see the impact of AI on SEO.

More on this

Can I block AI Overviews with robots.txt? No. Google has no robots.txt token for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Googlebot rules control all Google Search surfaces, so blocking Googlebot removes you from regular search too. To limit what appears in AI features, use the documented snippet controls (nosnippet, max-snippet, data-nosnippet) on specific pages or sections, or the Search Console generative AI inclusion control where your property has it.

Does ranking in Bing get me into ChatGPT answers? Not reliably. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers, but nobody has measured how much Bing indexing feeds ChatGPT citations. In Otterly's 2026 experiment, the test sites ranked in Bing and Copilot cited them heavily, yet ChatGPT cited them effectively zero times even with its crawlers visiting. Check that OAI-SearchBot is allowed and can reach your site.

Is the Gemini app the same as Google AI Overviews? No. They are different products with different controls. AI Overviews and AI Mode live inside Google Search and draw on the Search index, governed by Googlebot rules and snippet controls. The Gemini app is governed by the Google-Extended token, which Google says does not affect inclusion in Google Search and is not a ranking signal. Measure them as separate surfaces.

Should I still invest in classic SEO? Yes. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible. Organic rank also overlaps with AI citations, though not fully. What changes is how you report results: add per-engine eligibility, citation and accuracy checks alongside rankings and clicks, rather than expecting one traffic figure to capture AI's effect.
