UTM parameters: definition and what they show about AI referrals

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 4 min read

UTM parameters are tags added to the end of a URL that tell your analytics tool where a visit came from. Some AI products add them to the links they show. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs. Many other AI surfaces add nothing, so their visits are mislabelled or land as direct. Your reports see part of your AI traffic, not all of it.

What UTM parameters are

UTM parameters are name-value pairs appended to a URL after a question mark. Analytics tools read them and file the visit under the source, medium and campaign they name.

The common tags are:

  • utm_source: who sent the visit (a newsletter, a partner, a platform)
  • utm_medium: the channel type (email, social, referral, cpc)
  • utm_campaign: the campaign name
  • utm_term and utm_content: optional tags for keywords or link variants

A tagged link looks like https://example.com/pricing?utm_source=chatgpt.com. The page loads the same. Only the analytics record changes.

Marketers use UTM tags for campaign tagging: labelling links they control in emails, ads and social posts. The AI case is different, because you don't control the link.

How UTM tags work for AI referrals

The tag is written by whoever builds the link. When an AI answer shows a link to your site, the AI product decides whether to add a UTM tag.

As of October 2026, the evidence shows three patterns:

  • Tagged. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically includes utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs. Those visits are easy to spot.
  • Partly tagged. The same ChatGPT tagging is incomplete. Clicks from the free tier and the mobile app frequently arrive untagged.
  • Untagged or no referral. Many AI products don't stamp outbound links. Google AI Overviews emit no referral at all, so their clicks blend into Google organic or direct.

When neither a UTM tag nor a referrer header arrives, analytics records the visit as direct. That's why ChatGPT traffic can show up as direct even when ChatGPT sent it.

Note what has to happen first. A visit only exists if the engine showed a link. OpenAI's crawler page says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Why this matters for AI visibility

Tagged referrals are the cleanest signal most sites have that AI answers send people to them. They're also biased toward the products that tag.

This creates a measurement trap. If ChatGPT tags its links and others don't, ChatGPT will look like most of your AI referral traffic whether or not it is. Treat any share-of-trackable-referrals number as an upper bound for the tagging platform, never an estimate. The page on whether ChatGPT really sends most AI referral traffic covers this in more detail.

What to do next:

  1. Filter for utm_source=chatgpt.com and for known AI referrer domains, and report them as "tagged AI referrals".
  2. Watch direct traffic to deep pages, such as pricing or a specific comparison page, for unexplained growth.
  3. Don't compare AI platforms on referral share. Compare each one against its own trend.

Common misconceptions

  • "No UTM-tagged AI visits means AI never mentions us." Wrong. An answer can name you without a link, show a link nobody clicks, or send an untagged click. Mentions and visits are separate things.
  • "UTM tags affect whether AI cites you." They don't. Tags are added after the answer is written. They describe a visit, they don't influence an AI citation.
  • "Adding UTM tags to my own URLs helps AI tracking." It doesn't help and can split your reports. The AI product builds its own link, and tagged internal links can overwrite the real source.
  • "Tagged referrals show which leads came from AI." Only partly. Untagged and no-referral visits are missing, so attributing leads and sales to AI search needs more than UTM data.

More on this

What does utm_source=chatgpt.com mean? It means the visit came from a link shown in ChatGPT. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds this parameter to referral URLs. In most analytics tools you can filter by source to see these sessions. Treat the count as a floor, because clicks from the free tier and the mobile app frequently arrive without the tag.

Why does Google AI Overviews traffic not show as AI traffic? Google AI Overviews emit no separate referral signal. Clicks from them look like ordinary Google visits in analytics, with no UTM tag to separate them. Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, but no clicks, so you can't isolate this traffic from your analytics alone.

Should I add UTM parameters to my site's links so AI tracking works? No. The AI product creates the link it shows, so your own tags never reach those visits. Adding UTM tags to internal links can also overwrite the original source in some analytics setups and corrupt your reports. Keep UTM tags for links you place yourself, such as emails, ads and partner posts.

Can I rely on UTM data to compare AI platforms? Not for share. Platforms that tag links will look bigger than platforms that don't, regardless of real usage. Use tagged referrals to track each platform's trend over time, and read cross-platform comparisons as a measure of tagging behavior as much as traffic.

Does GA4 detect AI traffic without UTM tags? GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel in May 2026, which groups visits from recognised AI referrers. It still depends on a referrer or tag arriving with the visit. Untagged clicks with no referrer, and Google AI Overviews clicks, will not be classified as AI traffic.
