IndexNow: definition and how the protocol works

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 3 min read

IndexNow is an open protocol that lets a website tell participating search engines when its URLs are added, changed or deleted. In the registry fetched in August 2026, seven endpoints consume it: Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, Internet Archive and Amazonbot. Google is not one of them. The specification never mentions AI, and an HTTP 200 response confirms only that the ping was received.

What IndexNow is

IndexNow is a URL submission protocol. A site sends a short notice to a participating engine saying "these URLs changed." The engine treats that as a hint about what to recrawl.

It is not a ranking signal, an indexing guarantee or an AI feature. It speeds up discovery of changes for the engines that read it, and nothing more is documented. For the full picture of what it does and doesn't do in AI search, read the IndexNow and AI search guide.

How it works

The mechanics are simple:

  1. You generate a key and host it as a key file at your site root. This proves you control the domain.
  2. When a URL is added, updated or deleted, your CMS or a script sends that URL to a participating endpoint.
  3. The endpoint replies with an HTTP status code.

That status code is the part people over-read. Per the protocol documentation, a 200 confirms receipt only. It says nothing about whether the page was fetched, indexed or shown anywhere. Our review of what the IndexNow docs actually promise goes line by line.

IndexNow is a push signal. An XML sitemap is a pull signal that engines read on their own schedule. The two do different jobs, and the IndexNow vs XML sitemaps comparison shows when each one matters. Keep sitemap lastmod dates accurate either way.

Why it matters for AI visibility

The honest answer: indirectly, for Microsoft surfaces, with no measured effect.

The registry lists seven consumers, including Bing and Amazonbot. Bing's index backs Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries. So a plausible chain exists: IndexNow pings, then Bing index freshness, then Bing-backed grounding. Each link is documented on its own. Nobody has published the end-to-end effect size.

Microsoft stated in its February 2026 Bing Webmaster Tools announcement that IndexNow "helps ensure that AI systems reference the most current version of a page." That is a first-party assertion from a protocol operator, with no study behind it.

Google is absent from the registry. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and IndexNow plays no part in that.

The next move: treat IndexNow as free Bing-scoped hygiene. If you want Copilot citations, the evidence points to Bing index presence first. See Copilot citation factors graded by evidence.

Common misconceptions

  • "Ping IndexNow and AI will cite you faster." The specification never mentions AI, LLMs or Copilot. No engine documents a citation effect.
  • "A 200 means my page is indexed." It means the ping was received.
  • "IndexNow covers Google." Google does not consume it. Use Search Console for Google.
  • "It reaches ChatGPT." OpenAI is not in the registry. In Otterly's 2026 experiment, sites that stayed in Bing's index still drew effectively zero ChatGPT citations.
  • "IndexNow replaces sitemaps." It does not. Sitemaps serve every engine, including Google.

More on this

Which search engines use IndexNow? The IndexNow registry fetched on 22 August 2026 lists seven consuming endpoints: Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver, Yep, Internet Archive and Amazonbot. Google is not on the list. The list can change, so check the registry file at indexnow.org before relying on it. If an engine you care about is missing, IndexNow does nothing for that engine.

Does IndexNow help my content appear in Google AI Overviews? No. Google does not consume IndexNow. Google states that to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Check index status and snippet controls in Search Console instead.

Is IndexNow worth setting up? It is cheap to add and harmless, so many sites use it as hygiene for Bing and the other consumers. Set expectations correctly: it speeds up change discovery for participating engines and guarantees nothing beyond receipt. Fix bigger access issues first, such as robots.txt rules, firewall blocks and content that only appears after JavaScript runs.

How can I tell if my IndexNow setup is working? A crawler can confirm the key file exists at your site root, and a 200 response confirms the ping arrived. Neither shows indexing. For Bing, check Bing Webmaster Tools to see whether the submitted URLs are actually indexed. The downstream effect on AI answers is not observable from the protocol itself.
