Free AI Rank Tracking: Why There's No Rank to Track, and What to Track Instead

99Visibility Research · Updated October 21, 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

No AI engine exposes a position inside its answers, so there is no AI rank to track, free or paid. Google's generative AI report in Search Console shows impressions only, with no clicks, CTR or position. What you can track for free is real: Google AI impressions, Bing's AI citation counts, and a monthly log of whether each engine names you and gets your facts right.

Key takeaways

  • No engine publishes a position for AI answers, so any AI rank number is a vendor's model, not a measurement.
  • Google Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and nothing about clicks, CTR or position.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report is the only free first-party source of AI citation counts and the queries the AI actually ran.
  • A dated mention log, run the same way each month, tells you whether each engine names you and states your facts correctly.
  • Track each engine separately, because a single blended score hides the differences that matter.

What free AI rank tracking can and can't tell you

A classic rank tracker works because Google returns an ordered list of links. AI answers don't. They're generated text with a handful of sources, and the engines that produce them don't publish where your page sat in their candidate list. We cover why in AI rank checkers and why AI has no rank.

The first-party record is thin. OpenAI's full public disclosure on ordering is that ChatGPT "ranks search results using multiple factors" and that "placement is not guaranteed." Google states that third-party tools don't have access to its internal ranking data. As of October 2026, Google's own generative AI report in Search Console exposes impressions only. Nobody, including Google, has a position to give you.

So stop asking "where do I rank in ChatGPT" and ask three questions you can answer for free:

  • Was I shown? Google AI impressions, from Search Console.
  • Was I cited? Citation counts for Copilot and Bing AI summaries, from Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Was I named, and correctly? A mention log you keep yourself.

If you want the longer argument for dropping position as the goal, read why position isn't the metric in AI SEO.

How to track the free metrics by hand

Set aside an hour on the same day each month. Record everything in one spreadsheet with a date column.

  1. Google AI impressions. Open Google Search Console for your property and go to the generative AI performance report. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, split by Pages, Countries, Dates and Devices. Export the month and note the top pages. Our walkthrough on seeing AI Overview impressions in Search Console covers the menus.
  2. Bing AI citations. Verify your site at bing.com/webmasters if you haven't. Open the AI Performance report and record Total Citations, Average Cited Pages, the pages cited, and the grounding queries. It covers Microsoft Copilot, AI summaries in Bing and some partner integrations. There's no API, so export or screenshot it.
  3. Mention log. Write 10 questions a buyer would ask before choosing a business like yours. Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini, logged out or with memory off. For each answer, record: named (yes or no), your URL cited (yes or no), any wrong fact, and whether the answer showed sources.
  4. Referral visits. Check your analytics for AI referrals, such as visits tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. The setup is in free AI referral traffic tracking.

Keep the questions identical month to month. Changing them breaks the trend.

How to read the results

Read each source on its own terms. They measure different things and don't add up to one number.

  • Google impressions tell you how often a page appeared in an AI feature. They don't tell you whether anyone clicked. A rising line is good news with no traffic attached.
  • Bing citations are a count of times Copilot and Bing AI summaries referenced your pages. Microsoft calls Citation Share an observational metric, not a ranking system or a competitive scoreboard. Read it that way. It can fall while your absolute citations rise.
  • Grounding queries are the closest thing anywhere to the queries an AI actually ran to find you. Compare them with your mention-log questions. Where they differ, the grounding queries are the better guide to how buyers phrase things. Microsoft notes this metric is a sample.
  • Mention-log rows show where you're missing and where you're misdescribed. A wrong price or an outdated product name is the most fixable thing on the sheet: state the correct fact plainly on a page an engine can fetch.

If an engine never names you, check access before content. Look for an accidental noindex or nosnippet with our free noindex, nosnippet and data-nosnippet check, and confirm your robots.txt lets OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot in.

The limits of free tracking

Be plain with yourself about what these numbers can't show.

  • Your prompts are a sample. In Otterly's 2026 experiment, Microsoft's own AI Performance report counted 42,817 citations for one test site, while Otterly's prompt-based tracker logged 3,934. The time windows may not match, but the gap shows how much a prompt sample misses.
  • You can't always tell if the engine searched. ChatGPT searches at the model's discretion and rewrites your question into its own queries. If an answer shows no sources, it may come from the model's training data, which has a cutoff date.
  • Citation isn't proof of influence. An engine can use a source without citing it, and cite one it barely used.
  • Engines differ. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use different models and techniques. Otterly's test found Copilot citing sites thousands of times while other engines barely did. A blended score would have hidden that, which is why one dashboard for every engine needs per-engine columns.
  • Google's report has known gaps. A Google-side bug depressed impressions from about 12 August 2026. Treat trends crossing that window with care.

None of these metrics is something you can push to a target. What you control is access, index eligibility and the accuracy of what your own pages say.

The free tool that does the mention log faster

The manual log is the slowest part. The free checker on this site runs up to three buyer questions, either yours or ones written from your homepage, and scores whether the engines name you. It's a snapshot of one moment, not continuous tracking, so it fits as a quick first pass before you commit to a monthly sheet.

Use it to pick which questions go in your log, then keep Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools as your monthly first-party record. Neither of those needs a third-party tool, and both are free.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any free tool that shows my position in ChatGPT?

No tool can show a real position, because OpenAI doesn't publish one. Its disclosure is that ChatGPT ranks results using multiple factors and placement isn't guaranteed. Any tool showing a ChatGPT rank has built its own model from sampled prompts. Track whether you're named, whether your URL is cited, and whether your facts are right instead.

Does Google Search Console show AI Overview clicks?

Not as of October 2026. The generative AI report shows impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode, split by page, country, date and device. It has no clicks, CTR or position. Google has described more metrics only as a future intention, so pair impressions with your analytics referral data to see what traffic arrives.

Why use Bing Webmaster Tools if my customers use ChatGPT?

Because it's the only free first-party report of AI citations and the actual grounding queries an AI ran. It covers Microsoft Copilot and Bing AI summaries, not ChatGPT. It still shows how real retrieval queries differ from the prompts you'd guess, which improves the questions in your own mention log for every engine.

How often should I re-run my mention log?

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Run the same questions, the same way, on the same day, logged out with memory off. Answers vary between runs, so a single result means little. A trend across several months, engine by engine, tells you whether you're named more often and described more accurately.

Do SEO rank checkers measure AI visibility?

Classic rank checkers measure blue-link positions in Google, which is a different thing. Ahrefs found 38% of AI Overview citations came from pages in the top 10 in March 2026, so ranking well helps but doesn't guarantee a citation. Keep your classic rank tracking, and track AI impressions and citations separately.
